Weekend Update

1. I’m probably the last person in the world to try these, but I recently picked up these FENTY sneakers and love them! They’re very comfortable and easy to wear year round.

The creeper sole is substantial but lighter than I thought it would be, and you could easy wear them for a day of city walking, etc. That said, I wouldn’t use these for actual exercise, but for an everyday casual pair of sneakers – a great option, and the black patent keeps them clean. Recommended!

2. My favorite sort of article, which combines gossip and fashion – a great little Page Six article about all the pettiness and politics behind the Met Gala . Although after reading this, and seeing everyone who attended, I’m a little surprised by some of the invitees. There were a lot of tweens, no? Where was Cate Blanchett? More photos of Isabelle Huppert, please! Maybe I’m just a old grouch.

3. Tired of Met Gala coverage? Sorry but I can’t help it…another great article, via the WSJ Untold Story of the Met Gala, Wrinkles and All. Do you legally have to wear a seat belt in New York? I don’t think most gowns are seat belt friendly

4. An rather unsatisfying (in terms of pure info) update on the Jon Lonsdale controversy – if you need some background, you should read this NY Times piece first, which is far better anyway. Honestly I wish the update had been written like the Times piece – would have been a much better read.

5. No book recommendation this week – instead I’m plugging a TV show, one of my favorites right now, Harlots.

Period drama + feminist point of view + lots of salacious content? This is a show pretty much made for me, and I love it. The casting is also superb, especially with Samantha Morton as one of the heads of rival houses (remember her as the girl in Minority Report? How times have changed!).

Are any of you watching this? I’d love to hear if you love it as much as I do.

Also, if you want to read a great book on the topic of harlots – I highly recommend Slammerkin, by one of my favorite authors, Emma Donoghue.

Maybe it’s me, but I find a disconnect between “jean jacket” and “designer”, so I’d suggest a classic Levi’s version. That said, Burberry used to make a very cute fitted jacket and J Brand may have options.

If you’re searching for a jean jacket that may be slightly fitted and sometimes with extra detailing, check Anthropologie. I purchased one from there a few years ago that was slightly shorter in the front (perfect for us shorties) but still hitting the waist area. The tabs by the waist were enhanced in leather. Small details that make a huge difference from the regular run of the mill classic Jean jacket. Good luck in the search ?

Thank you! I actually just ordered one that I think Anthro also carries. You’re right that they have great options for petites.

I think KUT from the Kloth and J Brand make the best jean jackets – soft with a feminine cut. And, at an outrageously good price. Great washes and colors.

Agee with Christina re: KUT from the Kloth – I would usually never wear a jean jacket and LOVE the one I have from them!

I loved the Lonsdale piece and hadn’t been aware of the story. I usually believe the woman’s story completely, but I’m not sure about this one, and was suspicious from the start of the article. What do you think? Is he guilty? I recently finish “Oh the Glory of it All,” very sad but so enjoyed it, thanks for all the great book/article recomendations!

I don’t know what I think…the story is so complicated as you say. I always want to be on the woman’s side, and if you read his deposition and check out some of her mom’s emails, you can see how her mom might have even pushed her…what a complicated situation. So glad you like the book!

I read the New York Times Magazine piece… it left me extremely uncomfortable. While I think their relationship sounds dysfunctional, i have a hard time believing her version of the truth. I dont want to write a whole thesis on it, its so easy to conduct armchair psychoanalysis of people we have never met….

I recently bought a jean jacket from H&M, i wish it was a little snugger but it has no frills, no thrills and its perfect.

Have you watched the Handmaids Tale… I want to add that and Harlots to my watchlist.

I completely understand/agree with that uncomfortable feeling…what’s the “real” story here? I haven’t watched it but it’s on my list! Love the book.
