Weekend Update

1. A very pretty, Anthropologie-ish dress I’ve been eyeing from ASTR. If only I had a waist!

I’m a huge sucker for these sorts of peasanty type dresses you can just slip over your head in the summer, but for some reason I have a hard time finding the perfect one. They have to be lined, at least on the bottom (because I usually opt for the white/cream version), and not incredibly short (I’m looking at you, Free People). They can’t look too little girlish, or too hippie, or too Coachella. This dress is subtle enough to hit all points. I’m thinking since it’s from Nordstrom, I might just pick it up and wait until after baby, but I made that mistake with the first pregnancy, so…

2. As always, I love navel gazing articles about my area – here’s an interesting piece via The Guardian, about how Silicon Valley’s Housing Crisis Has Americas Highest Paid Feeling Poor. I’d love to hear thoughts from anyone in the area. I also have to comment that I’m very curious about the guy who makes $700,000 a year but can’t buy in Los Gatos. Does he have a zillion children? Super expensive bike habit?

3. Randomly I came across this article the other day about Goga Ashkenzi, the female oligarch originally from Kazakhstan who owns Vionnet, and thought it was so fascinating that I had to share. What do we think of her? Is she the real deal?

4. Another fashion article via the WWD, this time about two ladies who I think are the real deal, at least when it comes to fashion – the new strategy behind Elizabeth and James, and the Olsen’s bringing it in house. Personally I’m very excited about this! I’d love to see how the quality of the materials and design evolves. Doesn’t hurt that it’s cheaper than The Row, too.

5. This week I finished Black Edge, by Sheelah Kolhatkar.

Black Edge covers the rise and fall (the latter is debatable) of SAC and Steve Cohen, as well as the largest insider trading scheme in history. I have to admit that sometimes I find these finance type books a little boring – it’s kind of like how I don’t always want to read The Economist – but I found Black Edge to actually be very interesting, totally engaging. I read it through in two days. There are tons of interesting details, concepts are explained well, and there’s just enough gossip to keep it moving along….plus, I could read an entire book on Mathew Martoma, who I found even more interesting that the so-called protagonist, Steve Cohen! Recommended for fans of Michael Lewis and anyone looking for an interesting, relatively quick non fiction read in the world of finance and hedge funds.

    Hi Katherine,

Since I now know you are interested in SAC-stuff, have you watched the show “Billions” – it’s supposedly loosely based on him.

I like it but I am biased bc I like a few of the actors in the show, so it was inevitable for me. 🙂

    Have a great weekend!
    🙂

The article about Silicon Valley was pretty interesting. I have both a brother and sister living in the area. My sister is in San Jose and was greatly surprised what her small 1400 sq ft house cost (a year ago). My brother has lived in Los Altos Hills for 30 years. He couldn’t move there now. There is an older home down the hill where 5 young single tech workers (each) rent a bedroom and bathroom for $3K a month. It’s insane. I guess it’s a great time to be a landlord there. I don’t live near my siblings largely due to the costs.

Ooo… thanks for the book recommendation! I think it will be on my list to purchase this week.
I agree with you that Mathew Martoma is much more interesting. The New Yorker’s piece on him and Dr. Gilman was so fascinating I was sad when the article ended…

The book has more detail into that – I would check it out just for that. It is an incredibly fascinating relationship (And Martoma is stone cold…)

LOL! “Too Coachella…” Yes! I love those tops and dresses too, even though I don’t consider myself super boho. They’re just perfection for warm days here in Texas, and I love the dresses because I don’t have to think about pants or shorts. I also tend to prefer them in white, and you’re so right that it’s tough to fine the right combo of length and lining. Godspeed on the hunt, and keep us posted if you find a winner!
