Recent Purchases

Today I’m some recent accessory purchases that I’m very happy with…please let me know your thoughts and any favorite recent purchases of yours lately!

Hermes Lydie clutch. The favorite of my favorites, by far! This clutch was a Valentine’s Day gift from my husband…what a sweetie pie, it was a completely surprise, he knows exactly what I want without me having to say anything at all. Just kidding – I sent him the eBay link way in advance with precise instructions. I love vintage Hermes, especially in box leather, and had been looking for the perfect Lydie for years. I love how the shoulder strap can be removed (super easily) to turn it from a shoulder bag into a clutch, and the size actually fits a ton – my giant iPhone, a lipstick, keys, cash and cards, and even a full sized greeting card that I took to a wedding this weekend. I wish they still made this model, though it can be found for nice prices on the vintage market.

Here’s a picture of Victoria Beckham with hers (if you can’t tell, this was the era when she was beginning her transition into the new, improved VB who wears flats and harem pants). I actually quite like this outfit though I would swap out the platform shoes.

Do you have any vintage Hermes bags/styles? Please share!

Eric Javits “Squishee IV” sunhat. Every year, I buy a hat from someplace like J.Crew and then over the course of the season, or sometime during it being packed for a beach holiday, it ends up getting wrecked. I never want to throw them away because I always think the hat can kind of be redeemed, so I end up with a stack of semi squashed hats. Add to the mix the fact that I have a ginormous head, which often means hats feel quite tight, and I have quite problem. So this year I finally bit the bullet and bought this Eric Javits hat, and I wish I had done it earlier. It’s the perfect sun hat to take to the beach, walks to the park, etc. The size is perfect for my bobble head and it can survive a light squashing without damage – rebounds right back! Plus if there are any issues, I know Nordstrom will handle it…altogether one of my favorite new purchases, and so practical as well, since I wear hats nearly every day in the summer (wrinkle fears).

I wonder why we often have such trouble paying a little more for such practical purchases – this hat was close to $200, which is why I hesitated for quite a while. But why is it okay to drop multiples of that on shoes that you only wear a few times a year?

Bally Janelle shoes. I obviously have a loafer problem but I really, really, really love these shoes. All the credit for them goes to the gorgeous Rei of Front Row Beauty, who I first saw these on. My favorite aspect is how they can so easily transform from a slipper to mule, much like the Gucci Brixtons, but these are even easier to get on just due to the slits on the side.

So comfortable too. The leather isn’t that crazy butter soft as some Guccis, but still quite soft and after a few wears they’ve completely broken in for me.

Just a note for anybody considering these – they were sold out in almost all sizes on Moda for the longest time, and it looked like they just got a restock. I took my “true” size, I sometimes go half a size larger for other designer brands but for these I didn’t need to. They run just a tad smaller than Gucci (which run big in my experience), if that helps anyone.

Congratulations on your vintage Hermes! I wish lots of happiness using your new bag. I have several vintage/older Hermes and I love them all because they have so much history. My first Hermes bag was a vintage trim from the 1950s — and I have received so many compliments on it. It’s really special to me.
    All the best, Jane

Oh, the vintage Lindy is beautiful! 🙂 congratulations and enjoy wearing it! I really want a Lindy myself, I get into these phases where I’m “on hunt” and then I am “off hunt” for a while again… mostly the ones I find are not in such a good condition but I hope one day I’ll find the one for me.

    Dear Kat,

That clutch is GORGEOUS!!! WOW!!! 🙂
I’m curious, what exactly does “specific instructions” include – lol? 😉
Your hubby is a good one – that’s by far the nicest and most appreciated Valentine’s Day gift I have seen!

That’s the thing about HOP – they hold up really well hence their vintage popularity.

This clutch – really, Katherine, it is truly beautiful!
    LOVE!!

I still have my Squishee from my honeymoon – which was in 2001! I remember thinking at the time that it was an insane amount to pay for a sunhat, but it was the day before my wedding and I was in Saks; I needed a hat so I splurged. Well, I can tell you that “fwoppy hat,” as my older daughter called it ten years ago, has survived many many vacations and beach days and the babyhood and toddlerhood of two children, and it is still going strong! It may have the best CPW of anything i own.

My first and most favorite hermes piece – the lydie. I actually have one in cream (from french reseller), burgundy (heritage auctions-shockingly cheap weekly auction) and black (ebay). I actually had the strap redone so it would be a more contemporary length and better for cocktail parties. You gotta be handsfree to eat appetizers and have drinks! Think about it…

Thanks for the Bally recommendation! Went straight to the shop and got a pair and totally loving them! Bally sometimes can be boring but when they do it right, it’s really stylish and comfortable! 🙂
