Weekend Update

1. This looking for goodies to pick up from Shopbop’s sale (today is the last day!) might I suggest these Rag & Bone Harrow booties?

Rag and Bone booties, $348 with current Shopbop code MAINEVENT16 (last day)

I get a lot of requests for bootie recommendations, and this is one of my most popular ones. The Harrow is a Rag & Bone staple – they bring it back every year – and the black is rarely if ever on sale. The dip in front lengthens the leg line, the stacked heel makes it comfortable, and the construction is quite good, especially in the age now where designer boots cost four figures. Under $350 with the current Shopbop discount.

2. A good little read via The NY Times, Fashion Becomes A Victim Of Its Own Oversharing.

3. A synopsis on how Land’s End tried to be cool and failed, via Salon – anyone else follow this? I was surprised that the company gave up the ghost after such a short time though.

4. An interesting op-ed about the topic of plastic surgery and feminism, via The NY Times. I find this topic fascinating lately…I used to have the very uneducated view that Botox just meant frozen faces, until I realized that a lot of the gorgeous, young looking faces I’d been seeing around were the result of expertly applied Botox. What a revelation….I’m all for it, by the way!

5. I recently discovered the writer Dominick Dunne, and have been slowly making my way through his novels. This week I’m set to finish one of his most popular works, An Inconvenient Woman.

inconvenient-woman

An Inconvenient Woman is based loosely on the Alfred Bloomingdale/Vicki Morgan affair (Wikipedia it if you have some time – so interesting!), and covers what happens when “the other woman” appears on the scene in a high profile society marriage. Dunne is a great writer, and makes the story come alive without being too cheesy or campy. If you like books that give a peek in to the “high life” and don’t mind that it’s a bit dated, I’d definitely recommend An Inconvenient Woman. I’ll update on any more Dunne books as well, once I finish them!

    Hi Katherine,

I am not sure if you got a chance to read this, but just in case:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/michael-luo-new-york-times-china_us_57fbe1d2e4b0e655eab6ac7e

Luo’s write up was pertinent and well thought out in light of the recent obnoxious Jesse Watters Chinatown segment.

Onto cheerier topics, thank you for the fun links and another wonderful post to save me from the realities of real life! 🙂

Thank you Ava! I did see this, absolutely unacceptable on the part of Watters, I will be interested in what the ramifications for his career will be (if any).

    Hi Katherine,

I really love your book recommendations! Only if I find time to read through them… I’m really curious about how much time you spend on reading, say on an average week. How do you manage to find the time, especially with a baby?

    XO,
    Anna

Thanks Anna! I read every night…it’s a habit of mine, I can’t go to sleep unless I read, and it’s usually for an hour or so 🙂

Hi Katherine! Thank you for the book recommendation, I had to come back to this post once I finished the novel. I quite enjoyed An Inconvenient Woman. A bit slow I would say to get into but once it jumped off I couldn’t put it down. Would you say that his other novels are equally as enjoyable? Do you have any additional recommendations for this author? As always, love your posts. xox S

I’m trying a second one now, I’ll recommend it if it’s as good. Agreed – An Inconvenient Woman takes a bit of time, but definitely builds up after a while! I’m glad you enjoyed!

the piece about oversharing being the downfall of fashion is so correct. “fashion” is now so ubiquitos, it’s totally lost its mystery and for me, the desire to keep looking for whats’ next. I’ve over-saturated with “fashion” and enjoying the break from it all.

The oversharing on social media and checking in everywhere, i’ve been telling my single female friends that this is all a recipe for personal disaster and that we all need a little mystery in our lives. While i felt bad about what happened to Ms. West, i was more surprised that we dont’ hear about these type of attacks happening more often.
