Weekend Update

1. I wanted to share a great top I recently got, as I noticed that sizes were starting to go – this black blouse, from Trouve.

I normally don’t gravitate towards items with slits that make it difficult to wear a normal bra, but was needing a black blouse to tuck into skirts and pants that didn’t look too mumsy. I liked the tucked in hem of this blouse, and the cut was just loose enough to be comfortable (I took an XXS). The only negative is that it’s polyester – I would have gladly paid more for silk! Just a recommendation for anyone looking for a sexier black blouse option.

2. Have any of you been following the Vogue vs bloggers controversy? I just got caught up to date – there’s a good summary of the debate here, via Fashionista. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

3. If you’re going to read one article I recommend this week, it should be this one, via The NY Times – The Defiant Socialite. I know that many of you love these gossipy reads (as I do) and the subject, Dede Wilsey, is fascinating.

4. As someone who is still terrified of flying with her child, for fear of said child having a meltdown and everybody in the cabin hating me, I found this article – Throw Momma From The Plane – via The NY Times, very interesting reading. I hope I don’t sound sanctimonious, as before I had children, I treasured those quiet, peaceful plane rides too. So I understand both sides of this debate.

5. This week, I finished Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear (thank you to Jane for the wonderful recommendation!).

Maisie Dobbs is the first in a series of detective novels focusing on Maisie Dobbs (duh) – a private investigator based in London. I enjoyed this book quite a bit – I have a thing for detective novels – though my favorite part was actually learning more about London in the periods before and right after WWI. My only beef was that sometimes I felt that the plot twists were a bit too predictable – however, I still have the next few in the Maisie Dobbs series on my “to read” list, so that’s that! Recommended for any fans of historical fiction or detective mysteries!

I love the irony of Vogue.com going after bloggers, yet they had a feature on them a few years ago (and didn’t they include Susie Bubble and Bryanboy?). The Kim/Kanye cover was the final straw for me. I don’t buy or read Vogue anymore, not in print, not online. I’m not surprised it was Sally Singer writing these zingers however, with Sarah Mower chiming in. They want to keep the fashion editorial world the way it was, where I bet they were enjoying some of the perks the big-name bloggers now get. And yet that world is gone forever.

As for flying with Baby Feather, don’t worry about what other people think. If they can’t handle flying with other people’s children around they shouldn’t travel at all. When I see a baby who is upset on a plane (or train) I am always sympathetic to the baby and parents and it’s the people who start getting huffy-puffy about having to listen to a crying child that annoy me!

Aww c’mon, really?! “If they can’t handle other people’s children around they shouldn’t travel at all”? You don’t think parents have maybe a little bit of responsibility to try to keep their children behaved? I’ve always simply accepted children acting out – even the mom whose baby was crying in the QUIET CAR of the Acela (why go in the quiet car with a baby?! no one said anything to her, btw) – but it drives me crazy when I read these kinds of comments. The responsibility lies on both sides – parents should do their best to keep their children calm and other passengers should accept that sometimes it doesn’t happen. To expect just one party to deal with it is frankly incredibly entitled.

I agree with you both – I read Jill’s comment as referring to those parents who get upset about things that can’t be helped (like a crying baby whose ears hurt on takeoff, etc) As a new parent I’m always so paranoid about my child inconveniencing other passengers, partially because I remember how frustrated I could get when traveling (the Acela thing you mentioned would have driven me nuts). The responsibility does lie with both sides, absolutely.

I ended up with a kid who can’t stand being comforted when ze is crying so the prospect of flying with zir was horrifying. It didn’t help at all that in my hunt for information on how to travel with the baby, countless people acted like babies are hellspawn. It was worrisome but as it turns out, for the most part, people were gracious and patient and kind. Baby Feather is cute, too, so that always helps. Honestly, travel with zir as a near toddler was WAY easier than now when ze is in full mobile force. I hope you have a wonderful first flight with him, wherever and whenever you decide to go.

Hi, I wonder when it will all get better? I heard age 3 and above, things start to improve 🙂 I’m crossing fingers for us both.

Fingers crossed indeed! I think it will so depend on our kids and their temperaments. JuggerBaby is a loud and active kid, so we cope by giving zir MANY things to play with. I blogged about our first flights, which ranged from good to bad, but I may blog about how we occupy zir time as well.
