Weekend Update

1. Have you all already checked out the exclusive J.Crew x Net-A-Porter collection? There’s quite a few great items in there, and I noticed that one of my favorites – this striped tee with polka dot tulle trim, has just been restocked.

I was chatting with a girlfriend about this launch, and we both agreed that the one hesitation we had was just we were used to getting at least 25% or so off of all of our J.Crew purchases (like the sale I mention above), due to various coupon codes! These items however, are exclusive to Net-A-Porter, so I don’t think they’ll be getting the same discount treatment, at least not unless they make it to the Thanksgiving sales. There’s a few nice pieces, including this pique wool blazer and polka dot striped tee as well. The whole collection is worth a look.

2. Thank you Irina for this NY Times article recommendation, The Class Politics of Decluttering. This piece expresses so eloquently some of the reasons why I’ve moved a little bit away from a certain type of “minimalism” – sometimes, it can just feel like a competition, instead of just something healthy and fun to do for yourself.

3. What do you think about dressing up for fine dining? Absolutely a must, or a nice to have? Check out this Town and Country article on the topic, and please let me know your thoughts! I usually try to dress up nicely enough, but I have to admit that I really don’t feel comfortable, as some people do, when I’m the most dressed up person in the room.

4. A very interesting article, via Fast Company – The Big Business of Red Carpet Bling. What I wouldn’t give for some Anna Hu myself!

5. This week, I finished a book which was recommended to me by a reader – Circling the Sun, by Paula McLain (thank you, Cynthia!).

I really enjoyed this book –  I thought it was beautifully written, and I loved reading about the life of Beryl Markham, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, going east to west. Even though sometimes the things Beryl did were unlikeable, I still found her admirable, especially for being such an independent and self sufficient spirit during her day and age. Circling the Sun is set in Kenya, and although reading it made me want to visit Africa – immediately! – I wish there was even more description of the setting. I recommend Circling the Sun for any fans of historical fiction, and also if you liked any of McLain’s prior works, like The Paris Wife.

Hi! This is my first time commenting on your blog. Whilst what made me start reading your blog was a joint passion for Hermès scarves, what has kept me reading is your tips on books and articles. Living on the other side of the Atlantic, I don’t check in with the NY Times regularly, but I have read several of the articles you have linked to and I have enjoyed so many. This was another good example. Yes, I have read Marie Kondo’s book and yes, I have decluttered. Seeing it from another perspective though was completely eye-opening. I’m not one of the people the author writes about in the article and I do live in a small apartment not a vast mansion, but I have decluttered out of choice, knowing I don’t have to and not even considered that some have to do it out of necessity.

Thanks for the tip! (And yes, that top is cute. I am sucker for stripes though.)

    Have a great weekend!
