Weekend Update

1. Please meet the newest object of my shoe obsessions: these truly fabulous Gucci block heel fringed pumps. You may recall I have the Marmonts – I actually like these even more, because of the horsebit detail. Agh!!

Gucci, $795

I already have multiple pairs of the Marmonts and a black leather version, so the only one I can really justify at this point is the white pair, which honestly, is really excellent too. I actually prefer the look of white shoes when the heel is white too, but I always end up kicking the heels and they dirty easily. So this iteration is best.

I know quite a few of you love the Marmont pumps out there, so just alerting you to another great low stack heeled option from Gucci! You can also find them at Saks (mostly sold out), and Net-A-Porter, where sizes are going fast in black and a metallic pink.

2. Tim Gunn’s thoughts on why designers refuse to make clothes that fit “real” American women, and why it’s a disgrace, via The Washington Post.

3. An interesting article via Vanity Fair about some of the dirty secrets behind some of the most high profile divorces in Hollywood.

4. Another (!) good piece from Vanity Fair, about the Tao of Ivanka. What do you think of Ivanka? I admire how well spoken and polished she is, but have to admit that I haven’t purchased anything from her since a pair of flats last year, and probably have been unconsciously avoiding the brand.

5. A snarky and very funny piece from The Cut – A Terrifying Encounter with Bethenny Frankel (the article’s even better if you watch Housewives.

6. This week I finished The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls. I’ve actually owned The Glass Castle for quite a few years, and mistakenly thought I’d already read it and marked it down as a “so so”. I finally realized I had it confused with another book all along – The Liar’s Club, and sat down and opened my copy.

In short, I loved it. I couldn’t believe that there was this wonderful book, just sitting on unread on my shelf, for so many years (has this ever happened to any of you?). It was one of those books that even while you’re in the midst of reading it, you just know you’ll be re-reading again. Walls is a beautiful writer and describes her family and childhood with such humanity. I recommend The Glass Castle for anyone and everyone who loves a good book. I’m sure many of you have already read it, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I read The Glass Castle a while ago, but the story has stuck with me. I highly recommend reading it before the movie comes out, although I’m looking forward to seeing Brie Larson as Jeannette!

    Hi Katherine,

Really enjoyed your VF recommendations this week.
My sister beat me to it with the Gucci shoes (probably just as well, I’ve enough). The oversized fringe looks really good and the snake patterned interior is fabulous.

    Best wishes,
    Susie

I like the look of the Gucci loafers but I have some Tahari shoes that have the same feel (minus the fringe) so I will stick with those and use all the money I save to put towards my jewelry fund, ha ha. I read ‘The Glass Castle’ awhile ago and I remember it being very good. I liked ‘The Liar’s Club’ by Mary Karr too, and Mary is hilarious in person, I have met her a couple of times at readings. She is also quite stylish! As for Ivanka, I have a positive impression of her. I admire her bravery for jumping into the political fray with policy talk but I think it’s ridiculous to hold her accountable for things her father said years ago (I’m thinking of this week’s flap over the Cosmo interview). I do feel the NY press and media are harsher on her than they are on Chelsea Clinton, who really gets handled with kid gloves. This election cycle is such a depressing mess that I wish we could fast forward 4 years!

That VF article was prescient in light of yesterday’s Brangelina divorce news!
