Weekend Update

1. Every September, I start to go crazy over outerwear (even though this is the month when we typically get some super hot days in the Bay Area). Right now I’m quite obsessed with this beautiful blue coat, from Max Mara. It’s wonderful, right?

I wear so much black, white, and gray in my wardrobe that I’m always attracted to colorful outerwear as a result – it’s a way to add some color and interest, much like a handbag would. I’m a sucker for Max Mara’s camel hair, and despite its bright color, I think this Max Mara coat could stand the test of time. Very high on my fall wishlist, for sure!

2. I’m sure some of you may have already read this, but I had to share this Vanity Fair piece on Theranos. All of the information in the article has already been printed in one form or another (I’m a bit of a Theranos news junkie), but it’s a great summary and analysis.

3. An interesting article via Fortune, on Why Estate Jewelry Is Sparkling. I always love looking at estate jewelry in stores and online (my dream is snagging a great deal on some perfect Art Deco piece on eBay), but it’s always a bit intimidating to me, since I’m always worried a piece will need repair, or not be entirely what it seems. Do you buy estate?

4. A thought provoking piece on ageism, via The NY Times – You’re How Old? We’ll Be In Touch. Do you have any examples of ageism in your workplace? I’d love to hear.

5. Thank you, thank you, thank you all very much for all of the wonderful book recommendations you gave and/or emailed on last week’s Weekend Update. I now have a list a mile long filled with all of your excellent suggestions. I never would have heard or come across most of the books without your input, and any reader will know what a gift that is. Thank you all again!

This week I started a book which was recommended by Hui – The Diana Chronicles, by Tina Brown. I’ve always enjoyed Tina Brown’s writing and think she’s very talented, so gravitated towards this selection immediately.

I wasn’t old enough to really follow the whole Charles/Diana saga at the time it was happening (that’s the last time I’ll probably be able to say that about anything), so even though I knew in broad strokes what had happened, I barely knew any details. I knew it’d likely be interesting reading, but I didn’t realize how interesting – the saga of Diana before, during, and after Charles was one I’ve now realized I barely knew anything about. I’m almost finished with the book (hey, it’s nearly 600 pages!) and I can say that I’ve learned so much about each of the royal characters involved, much more about the modern monarchy in England, and of course, all about Diana. A fun and fascinating read (thanks again to Hui!). I definitely recommend The Diana Chronicles, especially for anyone with an interest in modern royalty.

Also, if you want to check out some reading recommendations – head to the comment section of last week’s update – there are so many great suggestions!

    Hello Katherine,
I am so flattered that my book (not written by me though) was picked up first by you. Ha, you made my weekend 🙂
I am happy you enjoyed it. As a little girl, I always loved stories of prince and princesse. This is exactly the sequel that I need for my adult self.

My late sister Whitney and I have always been big fans of estate jewelry. While I don’t know if we’ve gotten what you’d call deals, we’ve found some gorgeous pieces that you don’t see coming and going. The key is to find trusted sellers who know your taste. LorriMichelle is an ebay seller that I would highly recommend. My sister got her huge yellow sapphire and diamond engagement ring there and I got my emerald and diamond engagement ring there. Mine is over 100 years old. One of a kind!

Thank you Jaime, I looked up LorriMichelle and they have so many gorgeous items. Both yours and Whitney’s rings sound absolutely beautiful. I hope you and your family are doing well.

    Hi Katherine,

I think that coat looks beautiful. I’m quite conservative in my colour choices but I succumbed to the temptation of a cornflower blue Max Mara coat in early Spring and it’s one of my favourites. Terrific brand, xx

This spring I bought not one but two Max Mara linen toppers – one in royal blue and one in hot pink! I am a total neutrals girl and I love throwing a bright coat on over my black, white, and grey suits and dresses. I wore them both a ton.

I am definitely a fan of estate jewelry! There are so many unique and beautiful pieces to be had from jewelry shows and estate sellers, both signed and unsigned. I have been studying auction catalogs and going to shows here in NYC to educate myself on what’s out there and for what price. My personal favorites are mid-century Van Cleef & Arpels brooches, anything by Jean Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co., Oscar Heyman pieces, and brooches by Andrew Grima, especially from the 1960s.
