Weekend Update

1. I’ve been in ankle boot shopping mood lately – it’s probably due to the Anniversary sale, which has a few great options (so far I’ve picked up these Vince Camutos – will post photos soon!). My favorite ones that I’ve found so far however, are these Jeffrey Campbell cutout booties.

I saw these on a salesperson at Neiman Marcus (which ironically I think doesn’t even carry the brand), and they were so cute that I had to ask her where she got them. The cutouts make them a great spring/fall transition bootie, and these would go so well with a dress or shorts, too. I think the cutout sides and open weave makes them flattering even on shorties like me. Definitely on my list.

2. A fun and fascinating piece about the Gucci family (just check out the title!), via The Guardian – The Gucci Wife and the Hitman.

3. Yet another  interesting piece from The Guardian about not saying sorry for bringing your baby on a plane. What do you think? Before we flew with baby Feather, I honestly thought of making these little goody bags, but ran out time and it completed slipped my mind. He didn’t cry at all except for maybe ten seconds, but those ten seconds felt like ten minutes when we were on a plane!

4. Hermes fans will want to read this article, via Bloomberg – Hermes Heeds The Masses, A Bit. I’ve definitely noticed the increase in production, and even formerly hard to get items seem to be more and more available. Anyone else?

5. This week, I’m reading Hillbilly Elegy, by J.D. Vance. The book describes the childhood and life of J.D., a self proclaimed hillbilly, and his extended family. It tells the tale of his family, and other white working class Americans living in poverty.

hillbilly elegy

Hillbilly Elegy is a fascinating glimpse into a world and culture that I personally knew very little about. It’s at times inspiring and other times quite troubling, and always insightful. A recommended read for anyone interested in American history, politics, or culture.

You can also read a fascinating interview with the author J.D. Vance, via American Conservative – Trump: Tribune of Poor White People.

Re the article on the baby and the plane… Yes it can get irritating especially when one is trying to sleep or has a horrible migraine attack while baby cries but babies cry. That’s natural and normal isn’t it? It’s highly likely there’s more bouts of crying because flying is new & most likely scary to a baby. Am sure there are adults flying the first time who aren’t ‘comfortable’ but they deal with it better cos as an adult you have better self control. Shouldn’t we as adults be more understanding of a baby & be more considerate of a hassled parent whose probably worried sick on why baby keeps crying?

Would like to ask anyone’s thoughts on toddlers though. I was sitting next to an adult who turned around & told off a mom for letting her toddler kick his chair continously during a day flight. But I partly thinks it’s his fault for reclining the chair so low. If you recline so low, for an adult at the back the chair hits his knee cos his feet’s long enough to reach the floor but for a toddler his feet’s still dangling off the seat…but I did have several experiences with toddlers who would reach from behind in between the seats to pull my hair / clothing or stick their shoe clad feet in between the armrests & there was 1 particular flight where this toddler would keep standing next to my seat to watch my movie! The kid would just lean across my seat handle blocking my mode of vision.

You sound like a very understanding person! The toddler behavior your describe in my opinion wouldn’t be OK for me as a parent – I’d definitely stop baby Feather from doing it. I think sometimes kids are so energetic and crazy though you may not notice everything they are doing, I would 100% want someone to tell me if my child was disturbing them!

I have a four year old son and he took his first flight at 6 months old. We travel frequently – both economy and business. He is fortunately a good flier and people often remark to me how well behaved he is. It is nothing that I do – I think it is just his disposition and he loves planes. In regards to seat kicking, I do not tolerate that behaviour from my son. Regardless of how low the passenger in front of my son has reclined his/her seat, I have never let my son touch the seat or continuously or violently play/touch the screen tray table. It means that I am continuously policing my son during the flight and letting him put his legs on me when he is tired/bored. Is it a comfortable flight for me? No 🙂 But I don’t think my fellow passengers should be forced to suffer any discomfort because I chose to fly with my toddler. I have had a toddler kick my seat continuously for a 10 hour flight – not comfortable at all! But I did not complain 🙂

“When we choose to emerge into the public realm we agree to encounter all manner of people we wouldn’t necessarily choose to spend time with otherwise….You may have to listen to this noise for a few hours, but parents the world over have to suffer this unholy cacophony for years…”

This kind of entitled attitude/statement gets my dander up. There is an obvious difference between our everyday ’emergence in public’ and being on the plane. And just because parents have to suffer through crying jags for years doesn’t mean they have to right to force others to suffer even for a few hours.

I think all (reasonable) people want is to see the parent trying — trying to keep the crying to a minimum, trying to keep their children behaved — not laissez faire parenting. I just can’t understand how kids are allowed to kick seats or disturb other passengers.

Yeah I agree with you completely on the trying…sometimes there’s not that much you can do but most of them time you can do something to help. And also agree on the crying part….it shouldn’t be “lets share the pain”!

I totally agree on keeping our children behaved and I am very conscious about keeping them behaved at all times in public. However, I do have to add that while flying with an infant/toddler, sometimes you have tried everything but nothing will calm/comfort an overtired child who cannot sleep on the plane, not even walking said child around on the plane or offering his/her lovey, pacifier or milk bottle. It has happened to me and I got a ton of looks from other passengers but honestly there was nothing we could do short off getting off the plane mid flight. She eventually got tired from all the crying enough to fall asleep.

Absolutely…I think if a parent trying their best, that’s all that matters. I totally understand what you guys went through, it must have been incredibly stressful for everyone.

I honestly can no longer empathize with grown adults who can’t comprehend that babies and toddlers are tiny humans who are learning to be human whereas they’re fully grown and should be mature enough to accept that sometimes tiny humans don’t know how or cannot behave as we would like them to. The fact is while we always enforce boundaries for JuggerBaby’s behavior, they ARE going to be upset and cry sometimes. I’d rather listen to a crying toddler for a 12 hour flight (yeah, that’s happened) than have the experience that some friends have had flying with grown men who took advantage of them sleeping on planes and groped them under their clothing! You want to talk about unacceptable and obnoxious behavior when trapped on public transit? Let’s be reasonable and talk about dealing with people who SHOULD KNOW BETTER and still assault others before going after little kids who are still learning how to do all this people stuff. Or adults who get drunk and disorderly, or talk at the top of their lungs for the entire flight. Oy! These adults presumably know better, but don’t act better.

I was extra-stressed on our first flights with JuggerBaby (http://agaishanlife.com/2016/06/our-experience-flying-with-your-small-kid-wont-kill-you/) because I know there are people who have these rigid and, frankly, entitled, attitudes. Luckily, we flew with understanding people with basic decency, we monitored JuggerBaby very closely, and it all went pretty well, all things considered, even though that last flight felt like a lifetime because ze was feeling ill and couldn’t get comfortable!
