Weekend Update

1. Happy July! Today I’m sharing a little dress which I’ve been eyeing from a new brand I recently came across – English Factory. I’m not quite sure what makes this brand particularly “English” (I suspect very little), but they have a lot of cute items at lower prices – like this lace up dress.

I’m admittedly a huge fan of the lace up trend – I’ve always loved it and there are so many options this year so I’ve gone a bit bananas. Another pick from the brand which is longer in length (but requires a slip) is this lovely white lace dress with black tie detail.

For those looking for another inexpensive summer dress option, I also like this Socialite strappy dress – I know it probably belongs in the junior’s section, but I love the strappy detail and think it’d look great with flats. And it’s under $40!

2. I still don’t “get” Vetements. I know I’ve posted this opinion before, and I’ll probably keep harping on it, just like the crotchety old lady I am. Luckily the WSJ is here to help, with this deep dive into the brand and its business model – The Cult of Vetements. After reading it, I kind of get Vetements more…but not really. Do you? Please share!

3. A long but worthwhile read via Mother Jones – My Four Months As A Prison Guard. An investigate reporter worked for four months in a for profit prison to write this piece. Long (very long….it might take you a few sessions) but a necessary read. An amazing piece of journalism and such an incredible commitment from the writer..

4. I enjoyed reading this article, by the excellent Robin Givhans, Why Washington’s Most Powerful Women Are Wearing This Jacket. The jackets in question aren’t my particular aesthetic but I’d still wear one if I thought I’d have the chance for an easy conversation opener with Janet Yellen!

5. This week, I finished the excellent Homegoing, by Yaa Gyasi. I really enjoyed the book and learned quite a bit as well, especially about the slave trade in Ghana.

Homegoing

Homegoing is a fictional family saga which stretches over 300 years, and takes place in Ghana and America. It’s amazing that Homegoing  is Gyasi’s first work, although it seems like the industry recognizes her talent, having paid over $1M for the publishing rights. Highly recommended.

Have a great weekend!

Just wanted to pop in and say hi! It’s been a while since I’ve gotten a chance to read fashion blogs. Will have to pick up a copy of Homegoing. I worked in Ghana for a short period and was able to visit many of the slave trade sites. Also, love your recs on the Nars and Bite Beauty lipsticks.

Hi Trang! I’d really recommend Homegoing then, as most of it takes place in Ghana and the slave trade is a key plot element. What an amazing experience you had.

Enjoyed the Wash Post piece about the power jacket–McLemore definitely found a void and a way to fill it. I empathize with her customers. I do find that as a professional woman it is sometimes tough to find the right look.

Also that English Factory dress is remarkably similar to an on-sale Philip Lim shirt you posted about a few weeks ago (which I purchased and love).

Also I don’t get Vetements either.

Yes that dress is! I thought of that top too. That top is obviously better quality with better material…the dress is more of an inexpensive thrill. Good to hear I’m not alone about Vetements!

I tried reading the article about the sweatpant designer… then thought why bother, so not my aesthetic. I cant fathom why people would pay that kind of money to look… like… that. No do I wish to waste my time finding out why… on to the prison guard story. Having spent 9months as a psychologist intern in a psychiatric prison many moons ago, this story should be more relatable.

I usually shy away from reading MoJo because I find it too intense. But thanks for including it in this weekend update. 🙂
