Weekend Update

1.For those looking for a cool white dress for summer – I wanted to share this J.Crew linen shift dress early on, as J.Crew seems to be selling out more quickly lately!

If cap sleeves worked for me, I would be all over this dress. I love the cut, the material (linen), the fact that it’s a white dress that doesn’t seem too see through, and the subtle grommets. Perfect for work or play, and available in tall and petite sizes as well!

Also, for those who missed out on their size on the Leith midi dress I linked last week – here’s another great option from Wayf with good reviews, also under $70. Love this style of dress – so comfortable and easy to wear. This ASTR dress is another fun midi style, but definitely shows a bit more skin, for $74.

2. A very interesting article, via Vanity Fair, about the feud currently brewing over the late billionaire Bruce Wasserstein’s fortune amongst his various children from three different marriages. He sure was a busy guy, right? 

3. Yet another piece, via the BBC (I could read an endless stream of these) about flashy, wealthy Chinese fuerdai – this time in rural America.

4. A short article via Bloomberg which I’d love to hear your opinion on – Jack Ma, CEO of Alibaba, claiming that fake luxury items are now sometimes better than the real thing. What do you think?

5. This week I finished So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed, by Jon Ronson, which is exactly what it sounds like – a book about those who’ve been publicly shamed, usually through social media.

I’d read one of Ronsons’ earlier works awhile back – The Psychopath Test – which a lot of people love and which I’ve been recommended a few times. For some reason, I was just lukewarm on it, but found Shamed to be much more engrossing. Partially because I remember most of the “social media shaming” incidents that he writes about…but also because it pushes the reader to think about shame in their own context as well. How has being shamed in the past changed what we’re willing to do, or share publicly, today? How do we get over past humiliations? A fascinating read and one that will definitely make you think differently about the nature of shame, both public and private.
