Weekend Update

1. Today I thought I’d share a great mid weight summer dress which I recently received, which was not only super flattering but a great price – this Leith tank dress, which is available in black and a lovely peach, for under $ 70.

The material is a nice weight that isn’t too heavy, yet isn’t too light that it wrinkles super easily/is too transparent. It’s one of those closet heavy hitters that can genuinely work for the office, drinks at night, or casually, depending on how you accessorize it. And, it has pockets (yeah!). I was originally going to post about this dress once I had a chance to photograph it on, but it seems to be selling out quickly so I thought I’d share now. If your size is sold out, I’d keep checking back, as it keeps coming in and out of stock (I got the black this way).

2. Have you ever stayed at the Four Seasons Hualalai? I’ve been exactly once, it was about six years ago, and I’ve been scheming to get back there ever since. I tried to do a big extended family Christmas there a few years ago, and the prices were so scary. We ended up at the FS Maui instead, where the rates almost seemed reasonable in comparison. Anyway, it’s a great overall experience, and I found this Bloomberg article – “The Worlds Smallest Ukelele“, on the current battle raging between the millionaires and billionaires at Hualalai a very interesting read. I do have to agree, when you’re paying four digits nightly per room…you don’t necessarily want to wake up at the crack of dawn just to race down and secure pool chairs.

3. I just finished reading this article, via the WSJ – Ranking the Resale Value of Designer Labels. Interesting reading, and not really a surprise about which brands and categories hold their value most, although it was good to see the actual numbers. If you’re not a subscriber to the WSJ, try this Google search, and click on the top WSJ result.

4. I came across this article, from Seventeen Magazine (!!) of all places, about a young girl forced into becoming a teen bride by her parents. An engrossing read and Jasmine’s spirit is truly admirable.

5. I haven’t been reading any new books this week, because I’ve been busy re-reading old ones – the entire Song of Ice and Fire series, from beginning to end. For die hard fans of the book, I’d really recommend doing a re-read at some point – there are so many new details you pick up, and you view characters and events very differently. It just increases my respect for the amazing story teller that George RR Martin is (one of my earliest and still favorite interview subjects).

Along with Game of Thrones, I’m recommending another favorite of mine this week – Kitchen Confidential, by Anthony Bourdain.

Kitchen Confidential

Most people have heard of Bourdain or seen his show, but may not have read his book (which helped propel Bourdain to celebrity chef-dom). Kitchen Confidential is a mix of Bourdain’s own experience becoming a chef, and his commentary on the restaurant industry in general. Recommended reading for any foodies (yes I hate that word along with everyone else), any fans of Bourdain, and anyone whose just curious about the restaurant industry and what it takes to become a chef.

Have a great weekend!

That piece in Seventeen was such an unexpectedly good read. What a strong young woman. Thank you so much for sharing!

    Hi Katherine!

I always love your recommendations! What size dress did you order in the dress? Do you think it runs true to size? (the reviewers claim it runs small..)

Hi Sammie, I took XS and found it true to size, if you’re bustier though then that’s the only case where I’d size up.

I’m also currently rereading A Song of Ice and Fire. I’ve read the first three books many times over, but I’m not as familiar with A Feast for Crows or A Dance with Dragons. I definitely agree that you pick up new details from each rereading. Every book is like an intricate tapestry. The closer you look, the more interesting it is. Do you watch the HBO show too? I’ve fallen a few episodes behind, because it’s not nearly as good as the books.

Yes there are SO many interesting details! I do watch the HBO show religiously as well but it’s a little exciting/disappointing at the same time, as they are now ahead of the books. I wish I could have read events first, instead of watching..

FYI, if you’re interested, Lucy Kalanithi did a Charlie Rose interview a few weeks back. I read the book after you posted about it. Also, Charlie FINALLY updated his website, so you can watch the interviews on your iPhone/iPad!

Just thought I’d share. I hope you have a good weekend.

Thank you again for your sales alerts. I ordered the Stella McCartney dress but subsequently received an email from Nordstrom that my order was canceled because the item was no longer available. Bummer! It would have been perfect!

I have not stayed at the FS Hualalai but like you, I’ve stayed at the FS Maui, which had a similar wake-up-at-the-crack-of-dawn-to-race-to-reserve-pool-chairs system. Given that the FS brand gives such focus on the customer experience I found it odd.

That’s happened to me twice so far with Nordstrom this sale season too! It’s such a bummer! I’d bookmark and check back, hopefully a return will pop up. Yes you are right about FS Maui too – luckily at least with a larger group there you can spread out who has to go down and claim the spots!

Hi Katherine, big fan of your blog! I know you had a baby somewhat recently and was wondering if you breastfed. If so, do you have any breastfeeding wardrobe recommendations?
    Thx!

I do…I’ll try to do some in a post maybe in the future, but I wear a lot of button down shirts, v-neck dresses along with bralettes as a starter. I like bralettes better than nursing bras.

Funny – been at both Four Seasons but preferred Maui better. I did also read an article about the crazy rush for pool lounge chairs at the crack of dawn there. Nuts (but that pool is heaven!). Hope all is well.

There is! But we found if you came back later in the day it wasn’t so bad…could snap up the chairs that the early birds were just leaving 🙂

You are a very inspiring person! I’ve always told myself that I haven’t got time to read, but hey, you just had your baby, and your job is probably demanding too, and yet you still got time to read so much! I’m very much inspired to read more!

Thanks so much Emma! I’m at home with the baby for the first year 🙂 I love to read so I always make time, even if it means sleeping less. But it definitely gets tiring!

I got married at the FS Hualalai few years ago. It’s my favorite of all of four Seasons I’ve been too. Which one is yours?

PS I kept my green Kelly and I love it! Thanks for your advice.

What a beautiful wedding site! I keep waiting for someone I know to get married there so we can have an excuse to go, lol. Favorite might be the Gresham actually – it’s such a beautiful property. But FS in general is always excellent and Hualalai is also at the top 🙂
