Weekend Update

1. Every week I feel like my shoe wishlist just gets longer and longer. There are so many great ones this season! Here’s a beautiful pair which have been on my list for awhile. I’m just waiting for sale time to pounce.

I’m all about shoes which I can wear all the time – that’s why my Gucci Marmonts are still one of my favorite designer shoe purchases of the year.  These Tabitha Simmons flats are so lovely – the embroidery is gorgeous and the tan color is perfect for spring and summer (though the black is great too). And I’m a huge sucker for a mary jane.

I was hoping they’d be found at the Matches private sale – but they aren’t! Drat! But there’s still lots of other goodies – I’d take a browse if you have time.

2. Do you research most of your purchases, or are you an impulse shopper? What’s the longest and the most time you’ve ever spent thinking about an item? I’d love to hear your answers, especially after reading this interesting article about how millennials can spend hours researching purchases –  Online Browsing is the New Impulse Buy, via Racked.

3. Are you guys on Snapchat? I have to admit that I’m not – I have a token account but I’ve never used it. Sometimes I feel like I should just wait until my baby grows up and then he can explain it all to me. However, I did find this article, via Recode, on the future of Snapchat and its founder, very interesting – Evan Spiegel’s Private Snapchat Story.

4. Did you know that Raf Simons is going  to Calvin Klein? I’m a big fan of Simons – I love his aesthetic and he personally just seems like such a nice, quiet guy (which means he’s probably a secret monster of course). Fashion followers will find this article interesting, via the Business of Fashion – Why Dior is Struggling to Replace Raf Simons. How much control do you think designers should have over various aspects of a brand’s business?

5. This week, I finished The Sympathizer, by Viet Thanh Nguyen.

The Sympathizer

I’ve read several books (the usual suspects like excellent The Things They Carried) and watched movies about the Vietnam War – but after reading The Sympathizer, realize that they’ve all been from the standpoint of Americans, fighting or observing in a foreign country. The Sympathizer however, is told from the viewpoint of a young Vietnamese revolutionary, and takes place in both Vietnam and the United States. The story is at times funny, violent, very serious, hopeful, or some combination of these all at once.

I enjoyed The Sympathizer, but it wasn’t the easiest read for me – it went slowly at times, and the subject matter was much more serious than some of the lighter fare I’m looking for at the end of a long day. If you love well written fiction however, or you would like to learn more about the Vietnam War, I’d recommend it. Also, if you read and loved The Orphan Master’s Son – I’d also recommend you give The Sympathizer a try.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Katherine, I want to know what do you think of the price of these so called “luxury shoes”? Arn’t they insane to charge 825$ for a pair which are not even made of leather? A few years ago, they might cost 500-600, now they are 800-1000! I hope with the global economic slowdown, there will be less people buying these shoes and eventually the brands can reduce the price!
BTW, I always like your Friday posts a lot! Thank you. Hui

Hui, I COMPLETELY agree with you, which is also why I am very open about only waiting for sale…ha! The prices are outrageous! This pair I can give a little bit of a pass on because of the embroidery, but still not to the tune of $800+. I love Chanel shoes too but even on first markdown I’ve often found the prices still too high.

Hui, I was just about to comment the same thing ‘They’re not even leather!!’ (Joan Cusack in Working Girl.) Now, I clicked through to look at Katherine’s Gucci shoes – they are even more expensive, but somehow I don’t find that so disturbing – they are leather, they look supportive, they are a wonderful design.

I second Hui’s thoughts about your Friday posts–love them and your selections. In the past few weeks I have purchased something from each of them! Which gets me to your question about researching items to purchase. Bottom line is that it depends upon what it is but with limited time these days (2 kids plus work) I’m relying more and more on “edits” like your blog, where someone with a good eye has already done the legwork.

    Those embroidered flats are lovely!
Btw, an update on the ATP sandals I picked up over Christmas – the sole is already starting to split which is very annoying. The materials used are high quality leather but it looks like the construction is very shoddy. So irritated — won’t be buying again.

Thanks Ammu! So disappointing to hear about the ATP flats – I was going to try some this sale season but now will hold off.

I think Ancient Greek Sandals are better quality – I bought a few pairs two years ago and they are still going strong.

Hi Katherine! Just a note that the Matches sale is only open to those personally invited (even though the code is right there on the site) – if your account doesn’t have a certain level of spend AND you were not “selected”, the sale does not work. I know….I got all the way to checkout before I found this out. I was very disappointed by their customer service rep’s attitude toward it, as well!
Not at all your fault, but readers who were not invited won’t be able to use the link. Sad!!

Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry! I had no idea…I thought it might be private but when I saw the code I display I figured it was a public sale. That’s not cool about the CS attitude…I understand not being able to do anything, but it should still be polite.

Don’t know how often you check comments but those embroidered Tabitha Simmons shoes are on sale at 40% off on Farfetch. All sizes available but at limited quantities. It says the store is Browns so I imagine it will also be on sale at brownsfashion.com

Kat, you’re a bad influence to my wallet! Every time I check your blog, I always end up purchasing something I don’t need (but want, of course, ha ha ha!). FYI, if you go to Browns Fashion in the UK, the Tabitha Simmons is “only” $600 and with a 10% coupon for 1st time customer, it’s “only” $540. Just thought I’d share since all the US sites seem to price it around $825. Cheers.

Sonita I’m honored as I know you have such amazing taste. Thank you for the notice on the shoes and the coupon too – I had no idea about that 10%, every bit counts!
