Weekend Update

1. This week I’ve been very much lusting over the Santorini dress by DVF, which a dear friend helpfully linked to me, noting that it looked very similar to my favorite Camila dress, only in a cotton/linen blend and short sleeved….aka my dream casual dress. I want it, very very much.

Actually, I want this entire outfit above, including those truly excellent Aquazzura sandals. However, I usually wait for DVF to hit sale – or at least a Friends and Family, like what Bloomingdale’s has going on right now. This particular dress however, has been flying out the door – it sold out on Shopbop before I could grab it during the sale, and Net-A-Porter only has a few left. It’s a case of knowing an item I want is overpriced at full price…but liking it so much I might get it anyway. You know what I mean?

2. Do you all watch Silicon Valley? If you haven’t, you must – its one of the best shows out there. I enjoyed this article, written by a former Newsweek editor about his time working for a startup (he’s now a writer on the show), via Fortune – My Year in Startup Hell.

3. I really enjoyed this long, but very engrossing article about via Vanity Fair, about what happened to the Reed Krakoff brand (remember it)? The article is all about the business of fashion, is quite gossipy, and is well written – the best combination in my book! If you’re going to read one article I recommend this week, read this one!

4. A short but very interesting article, via GQ, from David Chang of Momofuku fame on the challenges of operating a restaurant successfully. I wish more restaurants would go all inclusive, including tipping – so much less confusion, especially for international visitors.

5. This week I’m recommended a book which I’ve been meaning to share for months now – Year of Yes, by Shonda Rimes.

Year of Yes

Some of you may know Shonda Rhimes from watching one of her very successful shows – Greys Anatomy, Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder. I actually currently don’t watch any of these – I used to watch Grey’s, but kind of got side tracked. But I still know enough about Shonda Rhimes to know that she is a true powerhouse – a female showrunner of a string of highly successful productions. What she’s achieved is nothing short of amazing, especially in the male dominated entertainment industry, and I was excited to read her book. And I have to say, that it was great! Rhimes is proud of herself and her achievements (rightfully so), and goes into how she got there, mistakes she’s made along the way, and has learnings to share as well. The book is a bit autobiography, a bit advice column, and some parts are just plain funny. I wish I could have learned more about Rhimes’ life, but maybe that’s for the next volume. I highly recommended Year of Yes – especially for fans of any of Shonda’s shows.

oooh, can’t wait to read the Reed Krakoff story. Was saving up my pennies when I realized that the bags regularly went on sale. And then I lost interest in them, but they always seemed so well made. I hope he is able to one day come back.

It looks like he is…plus I think you can probably get the older Reed bags right now for a good discount on eBay 🙂

That’s really funny you mention the Dan Lyons article! I’m currently reading this book that just came out – Disrupted. An incredibly funny and eye-opening look into the startup world in Silicon Valley.

I have really enjoyed all your book recommendations. I spend way too much time commuting and am always on the lookout for new books! Definitely going to check out Year of Yes. Also, I just finished The Cartel which you recommended a while back-loved it so much!

I was paging through Elle and saw that Reed now has a “collection” that sells at Kohl’s. It’s interesting the article didn’t mention that.
