Weekend Update

1. Please allow me to share the latest item on my “please, please, make it in my size come sale time” list, this excellent intarsia star cardigan from MaxMara.

I’m a huge sucker for star prints (like this Equipment star blouse), along with huge, cozy knits. I’ve written several times about my love for cashmere, but as the months get warmer, I’ve been more and more drawn to cotton knits. This star print cardigan is so cool – I love the print and think it’d look great with just a plain tee and jeans. It would be the best thing to wear to an airport. I love it! And being from MaxMara, I know that the knit quality will be great.

Now, I’ll just hope it makes it to sale…

2. Many of you may have already read this now infamous rant, from a writer who accuses Elle Magazine of ruining his interview with designer Rei Kawakubo. In it, he manages to malign quite a few major publications – including Vogue, Atlantic, and of course Elle – and even talks smack about Anna Wintour! The read is interesting, though often cringe inducing, via The Observer – Elle on Earth. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

Warning that the article is quite long, and often rambling – for a summary of the juiciest bits, you can just go to this Fashionista piece.

3. Are you fans of Balmain? I’ve never been particularly drawn to the brand, but perhaps its because I’m too much of a fuddy duddy. I did enjoy this article, via the WSJ, on how Balmain as a label has been able to achieve such a meteoric rise in the fashion industry.

4. Another great article, also from the WSJ – When A Dream House Becomes A Money Pit. I feel like there’s an endless amount of improvements and changes we’d want to do with our home, so I can definitely relate!

5. This week I finished The Price of Salt, by Patricia Highsmith.

Salt

I’ve enjoyed Highsmith’s other works (such as The Talented Mr. Ripley), but I hadn’t heard of The Price of Salt until the movie Carol came out (I realize this may make it seem like I only read books that were made into movies). I never actually saw Carol, but it starred Cate Blanchett who I worship, so that was enough to make it interesting for me.

If you see the book cover I included above, you’ll notice it says Claire Morgan, which was the pseudonym Highsmith used, having published a lesbian love novel in 1952. Its a reminder of what American society was like at the time of publication, though Salt is much more than a “book about lesbians”. I found it to be very thoughtful, and more a well written character driven novel about two women and their worlds.  It’s a slightly slow paced book, yet I was never bored – the protagonists were fascinating, and their own struggles very real. Recommended for those looking for a good fiction novel, and fans of Highsmith’s past works.

Mr Hyzagi’s terrible prose is perhaps the reason the whole deal bombed? 🙂 Just sayin’

Please please please see Carol! The film is great and the costumes are divine! Cate does not disappoint, as usual. Her furs, jewelry, and clothing is magnificent. I can see you doing one of your movie wardrobe pieces on it!
