1. I’m wishing happy birthday to myself (well to this blog…) today, which is five years old now. Five! I can’t believe it. Thank you all so much for your readership and conversations over the years. Thank you, thank you, thank you! It has been such a wonderful pleasure, and I hope I can continue this blog for at least another five years. Then I’ll have a ten year old webspace…will that make me the Geocities of 2021?
If you have any feedback/suggestions for topics you’d like to see – I’m always open and love to hear them. I have heard the request for more interviews – I’m slowly trying to work on this!
Anyway, if I could buy a theoretical (theoretical as I’m trying to be nice to my wallet currently) happy birthday present to myself, I would get this Pomellato Maxi Nudo ring.
I’ve eyed the Nudo rings for ages, but never took the plunge because some other shiny thing always distracted me. I recently saw though that Pomellato released a maxi size – I love this, since I think it can be worn both stacked or alone and still have enough of a “presence” on the hand.
By the way – if you’re interested in learning more about Pomellato, I really enjoyed this article via the WSJ on the brand, from a few years back. I love the idea of everyday, wearable fine jewelry.
2. Do you find yourself saying “Yes” all the time? I loved this article, by Lena Dunham, on the power of saying no. No!
3. Did you watch the Oscars on Sunday? Did you pay attention to the fashion? If so, check out this article, via The Business of Fashion, on what goes on behind the scenes when stylists are dressing stars – Inside the Oscars Dressing Game. And if you liked the article, I’d really recommend Teri Agins’ Hijacking the Runway, which goes much deeper in to the business of dressing celebrities for events.
4. A nice review of fashion week, via Vanessa Friedman at the NY TImes – I knew passively that there were a ton of designer changes/departures going on, but I’ve been kind of desensitized by this point, to be honest. At Paris Fashion Week, A Ghost Season.
5. Some of you may have seen this book on my Instagram over the weekend – a graphic novel rendition of Swann’s Way, by Marcel Proust, as adapted by Stéphane Heuet.
I’ll be very clear upfront that I’ve never read any of Proust’s works – just the mere description of them (difficult to read, lots of flowery language, monumental, and the always annoying, it’s better in French) were enough to scare me away. I love graphic novels however, and when I read the great reviews for Stéphane Heuet’s adaption, which he spent years on, I thought I’d give it a try. And I’m so glad I did! The drawings are beautiful, the story is interesting and lush, and it actually makes me want to (one day) read the original material one day. I’d recommend Swann’s Way to any fans of Proust, graphic novels, or both (if the latter, you are the most impressive reader ever and I worship at your feet).
Have a wonderful weekend!

March 4, 2016 at 8:30 amHappy blog anniversary, Katherine!
Have added the Proust graphic novel to my wish list. I read Swann’s Way a couple of years back, but haven’t managed to read the others. Reading Room at the moment, which is amazing. Loved the film too.

March 7, 2016 at 5:33 amI haven’t seen Room…and probably won’t. I did read the book and loved it…which is why I don’t really want to see the film version. I found that I was so involved in the book, and the story was at times so disturbing, that I don’t know if I could bear seeing it “live” in front of me!

March 7, 2016 at 9:58 amYes I loved the book! I agree, I’m a bit worried about seeing it all on screen…I also would be sad to see what parts the left out.

March 4, 2016 at 3:16 pmHappy blog anniversary! I sure do hope you continue for five more years, your blog is one of my favorites! 🙂
Have you seen the delezhen rings on Etsy? They are similarly shaped to the Pomellato ones, and much, much more affordable 😉 I own one of their pear shaped green amethyst ones and enjoy wearing it a lot.

March 5, 2016 at 11:50 amI love Pomellato jewelry but their customer service is atrocious. I recently bought a ring (my third; I am – was – a good customer) in Florence and it cracked almost immediately (within two or three weeks). The New York store sent it to Milan to be repaired. This process took 5 months, untold telephone calls – and $500. Never again.

March 5, 2016 at 2:26 pmHi Ella, I’m so sorry to hear about this, it sounds like such bad customer service. What a disappointment! Sadly it reminds me a bit of VCA customer service, which also charges an arm and a leg for repairs.

March 5, 2016 at 12:15 pmI just finished, Hijacking the Runway, which I picked up after seeing you mention it here, and I thought it was really interesting and a fun read. I wonder if the pendulum will swing away from celebrity influence/saturation in the coming years – with the reexamination of the NYFW format and the recent shakeups at major fashion houses it feels like that part of the industry could very well change too. I’ll have to check out Swann’s Way next!
Also, happy blog-iversary!
