Spring Dresses – Madewell, Topshop and Gap

It’s already been warming up quite a bit here, and I’ve started packing away some of my jeans and leggings. I wear casual dresses almost everyday in the spring summer – they’re so easy to pop on, and I always feel more put together.

I usually add a few dresses each summer, but last year I opted out due to being super pregnant. So now I’ve been doing some shopping for some more dresses which are a) casual and easy to wear, and b) machine washable. That last part is oh so very important, by the way. Here are some of my favorites!

This checked shirtdress from Madewell is super soft and comfortable. I’d seen this dress in person at the Madewell store, by the styling made it seem really short, like it could only be worn with leggings. The length (36”) given by Nordstrom seemed doable however, so I ordered it and the length was great – very wearable, even belted.

The fabric is really comfortable, and the dress even has pockets. It’s a very versatile item which I think could be worn with tights in the winter, or with bare legs for summer.

I used an old rope belt I had on this day as I was feeling particularly lazy, however I think this dress would look great and more polished with this equestrian belt.

I originally thought this Topshop dress would be longer, but once it arrived I realized it would be functional only as a beach dress (younger and more brave ladies by feel differently). I liked the design enough to keep it in reserve though, since whenever we’ve gone on beach vacations I find myself scrambling to find cute beach outfits beforehand (lest I end up resorting to overpriced hotel shops).

I ordered a size 4 US (one size larger than my normal Topshop size), and its just barely long enough. So keep that in mind, if you’re ordering!

I also noticed that this dress keeps coming in and out of stock. If it’s sold out when you check, I’d also check out this sweet baby blue version, by Trina Turk, and this pretty picot shift by BB Dakota.

An older picture from my diaper bag review, but I wanted to share one of my favorite spring dress options, since its back this spring season – this striped Gap dress. I have two of these and I wore them a bunch a few months after giving birth – the weight was heavy enough for fall/spring seasons, machine washable cotton, just slip on and go. I love the little side slits too – my version doesn’t have them.

There’s also another striped version here, which I assume might be a softer/lighter weight. And Gap has 40% off your entire purchase currently, with code SPRINGIT.

I’m addicted to dresses, so I’ll be trying out more as the season progresses…I’d love to hear any good, day dresses that you find out there!

I love this post! I have been trying to wear dresses but I am having hard time finding any that I think I would actually wear. I would love more of these posts so I can get more ideas and recommendations. Thank you!

All three dresses are SO cute. And I have a confession to make: I’m not a huge fan of Hermes bags (but could go crazy quite easily with their bracelets!), but your Kelly with that strap looks amazing! 🙂

I also notice that you appear to be wearing the Ballon Bleu watch? I was wondering if you would ever consider doing a feature on watches? I love your jewelry features!

I like the canvas strap too 🙂 Its a favorite.

I will try to do a watch post one day, I don’t have very many though…maybe I’ll try to interview a jewelry expert instead 🙂

Katherine, I write you with the very sad news that my sister, Whitney Farris, one of your loyal readers and frequent commenters, has passed away following her surgery last week (I know she mentioned here that she was having it). I know how much she enjoyed reading your blog and thought you would want to know.

Hi Katherine – I noticed that the canvas strap on your Kelly looks quite short. Is that a customised shoulder length strap? Am looking for alternatives for my Evelyne apart from using a twilly to shorten the existing strap. Could you please share how you got your strap if it is a shortened one? Many thanks. Love your posts and belated congratulations on your 5 year milestone!

Hi Valerie, Hermès will shorten a a standard Evelyne strap. It doesn’t take long. I had 8″ taken from mine. It now works cross body at a long length and shoulder at shortest length, and is also perfect for Kelly crossbody and Toolbox long shoulder. I can’t tell it’s ever been altered. Hope that helps!

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for the insight on Evelyne straps!

Valerie, mine was a custom ordered canvas strap from Hermes, you can order them for the Kelly or get an Evelyne strap shortened as Elizabeth said. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your replies Elizabeth and Katherine. I shall have to enquire next time I am at a boutique. I had no idea these options were available!
