Weekend Update

1. I used to place orders at J.Crew all the time, but it’s probably been more than a year since my last one. My local store is always empty too – but there’s actually a lot of great basics now, I discovered!

In my shopping cart currently is this tipped contrast color cable sweater – I love the subtle contrast (and it also comes in ivory and tipped black). I’m actually liking quite a few items on the site currently, and I wonder if the quality has improved.

Have you been to a  J.Crew lately? Do you think the brand can recover?

2. Tory Burch is starting a new sportswear line, Tory Sport – an interesting article delving into the woman, and the brand, via NY Mag.

3. Did you know that The Met got a new logo? What do you think – is it the equivalent of a “typographic bus crash”?

4. Thank you to Alice for sending along this fascinating article, via The New Yorker: The Golden Generation – Why China’s Super Rich Send Their Children Abroad. I have to shamefully confess that I watched a few episodes of the YouTube show mentioned (in my defense I was super pregnant and not entirely mobile), and would not recommend it. Just read the article instead!

5. My reading this week – The Accidental Tourist, by Anne Tyler.

Accidental Tourist

I love fiction about ordinary life, ordinary people – and Anne Tyler is a master in this genre. I’d read a few of her past works, but The Accidental Tourist has been my favorite so far. The story of Macon Leary, a writer of travel guides for travelers who wish to avoid as much interaction with the local culture as possible, is bittersweet, and so believable. Highly recommended.

Katherine, my Feu de Bois Diptyque candle is, sadly, all burned up. How do you clean the wax residue so you can use the glass as a container? It looks like it might be quite a task!

Its actually easy! Put the candle in the freezer overnight, then you can kind of pry the wax out with a knife – it should fall out pretty easily that way 🙂 That’s what I do!

I don’t like the Rosaviola either…I only burned it once. It’s so pretty though…I’ll just keep it out as decoration!

Thank you for the article on young wealthy Chinese. London is also inundated with them, at the moment they mostly hang out outside Hermes. Sooner or later though they will get bored and western ideas like democracy and ahat have you will start to spread. I am all for it!

I always feel like salespeople in Europe are disappointed to learn that I’m from the US and not China, lol!

I like J Crew shoes. I feel in their case, you get a lot of bang for a great price point. Their cashmere has gone down significantly over the years though! It used to be plush and now I feel it’s thin and scratchy. ?

Yes I agree on the cashmere…I keep hoping they’ll improve it as part of their “turnaround”…

I LOVE that cable knit sweater! Too bad I’m sporting a baby bump right now, so I can’t really try it on. If this is the type of style they’re coming back out with, I hope the quality is improving in tandem. I haven’t bothered going into the store in months.

Congrats on the upcoming little one!! 🙂 Yes, style + quality improvement are both needed…just one isn’t enough.

As a petite person, I only have limited choices with brands. Jcrew is one of them. I agree their quality has been a hit and miss and hopefully it will be part of their turnaround as well. Thank you for sharing all the articles and books.

I’m a typophile. I will withhold judgment on “THE MET” logo until I see it in situ as context usually changes things.

P.s. I still miss the buttons though.
