1. I recently went shopping for some workout clothes, and realized that there are so many super cute items out now, that I wouldn’t be ashamed to wear out for errands/a casual coffee afterwards at all. When did this happen? Prime example – this Zella jacket below, which I just ordered.
I plan on using this jacket for my daily walks once the weather warms up a bit. I’m one of those shameful people who own a bunch of gym appropriate clothing, but haven’t stepped into an actual gym (except to lift water bottles and apples) in years. But I love workout clothes for their comfort, and since it’s the Bay Area, I’d feel comfortable wearing this jacket to run errands in after a walk or hike with friends. I’ve seen people having lunch at the Four Seasons in way worse!
2. Speaking of the Bay Area…I thought this article was very interesting (and a little alarmist), via The Guardian – Silicon Valley Braces Itself For a Fall – “There Will Be Blood”. With an article subtitle like that, how can you not be intrigued?
3. I’d like to hear your own opinions on the question the WSJ poses in the article – do you love or hate platform shoes? I prefer the look of flat soles, but nothing can beat the platform for comfort in my book, especially for high heels (has anyone found heels that rival the Tributes for comfort yet)?
4. I know that fur is always a controversial topic, so I admit that I’m a bit nervous to share this interview with Karl Lagerfeld, via WWD – Lagerfeld on Fur, Fendi, and Couture. However, the interview itself is so classic Karl and chock full of various tidbits, so I’m still linking it. You can either hate the man, love the man, finding him amusing, or some combination of all three.
5. I decided to try this week a book that’s been on my list for years – The Pelican Brief, by John Grisham.
I don’t follow John Grisham’s books very closely, though I have enjoyed other works from him, such as A Time To Kill and The Racketeer. While The Pelican Brief was quite engaging and easy to read (I finished it in two evenings), I was a little let down when comparing it to Grisham’s other works. I thought it’d be a bit better. Still, a fun thriller for those times you don’t want a very “heavy” read.
If you have any other Grisham novels to recommend, I’d love to hear them as well!

January 29, 2016 at 10:53 amI would say that he is eccentric! I like platform shoes, when the platform is hidden within the shoe.
And for fur, I am a wearer

January 29, 2016 at 11:52 am1. Wedges are cute, only if they’re slim and done right like the pair I am wearing here. Otherwise, I hate pretty much all wedges and platform shoes except in very specific shoe styles.
2. I am very against fur. Vintage fur I am .. sort.. of.. giving a slight pass on if it was passed down but I am not sure why we need real fur when the faux stuff feels just as good.
2. That jacket is killer.

January 30, 2016 at 8:32 amI am not for fur, but they are really so much warmer. it is not for nothing that humans wear them since the very beginning. I think if a person does not like fur, he/she should not wear faux fur neither, as they are made of synthetic stuff full of petrochemicals.

January 29, 2016 at 1:20 pmI love Karl, but dear god, some of his views are SO unachronistic. Fur is on its way out, no matter how many cute Pom poms fendi come up with. Most people are becoming aware of the problems (& horrors) associated.
Good article here: http://www.riverford.co.uk/blog/2016/01/28/guys-newsletter-ruminating-on-protein/ why we should be eating less meat, never mind wrap ourselves in animal skins. When I see people wearing fur I think of this : http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/video-real-price-fur-coat-3171710 and secretly pray they wear fake and stay away from me please…

January 29, 2016 at 2:52 pmI like seeing wedges & platforms on other people, but I don’t enjoy wearing them; give me pointy-toe kitten-heels and ballet flats and I’m a happy girl. I like simple skimmers even better: ballet flats with no embellishments whatsoever.
Enjoyed all Grisham’s novels. Maybe liked “Painted House” the most I guess, though I enjoyed all his legal thrillers.
Interesting Lagerfeld interview, especially why he thinks logos are important–I have a warm and wonderful mink collar inherited from grandmom that’s attachable to anything and I love it; if it ever wears out I’d buy a new one or vintage.
I love asymmetrical-closure motorcycle/scuba-style jackets, especially in fabrics and colors other than the expected black leather.
Interesting post, as always, thank you!

January 31, 2016 at 3:16 pmI liked Painted House too 🙂

January 29, 2016 at 3:21 pmDear Katherine,
That jacket is gorgeous! I feel like it would look great with some trainers and denim whilst shopping…lol, can you tell I “work out” the same way you do? 😀
John Grisham book are great as audiobooks to take with you while you walk/hike, cook etc. I’ve gone through lots of them this way and they are catchy-reads. I am excited to read the latest Mindy Kaling book you’re reading, she is so cute and find her show amusing. Oh and her costume designer, Salvador Perez is a serious engineering/fashion designing genius – he makes her look super-gorgeous in beautifully constructed creations for a gorgeous real bodied woman. Here is one of my faves of his

January 30, 2016 at 9:00 amFavorite, under-appreciated Grisham book: The Brethen
Also not as popular as The Firm etc., but I still think The Runaway Jury is one of his best books.
Katherine
January 31, 2016 at 3:17 pmThanks! I haven’t read The Brethren or Runaway Jury, so adding those to my future Grisham list.

January 30, 2016 at 10:57 amI have probably read almost all of John Grisham’s books (embarrassing I know), and my favorite is definitely The Partner!
Katherine
January 31, 2016 at 3:18 pmHaha not embarrassing at all! I love reading everything by authors I love. Since you’ve read all and your #1 is The Partner, that’s the next one on my Grisham list then :)I

January 30, 2016 at 4:34 pmWhile I think that jacket is well constructed and looks good, I am vehemently opposed to the new activewear as outside-of-the-gym wear. I really wish that sloppy trend would go away. Sorry, rant over. Off to read the KL interview.

January 31, 2016 at 6:37 amWhere do you live? When I was in California, Santa Monica area, I don’t believe anyone owned any other type of clothing, apart from sportswear. Though to be fair, it looked like most people actually exercised and looked great for it. In London, my home town, it’s quite different. People wear actual clothes, casual yes, but not sportswear, unless going to yoga or something. Occasionally you do see visiting people from the suburbs mostly, or tourists and they wear the most god awful sportswear in the street. And they look as if there never actually ever set foot in a gym. What can you say?

January 31, 2016 at 1:10 pmI live in Arizona, and until about the last year, it seemed people where happy to wear actual clothes – mainly jeans. But lately the active wear trend has take over. I recently did brunch with a girlfriend and I was wearing a denim skirt and sweater, and I was severely overdressed. even my 6 year old asked me if the other diners were going to the gym. Maybe it’s because I am an immigrant and have lived in other countries outside of the US that I find the trend quite awful. But I do really like that jacket.

January 31, 2016 at 2:57 pmThanks ladies for the debate…and I’m glad you like the jacket ahhhsoneo 🙂 I think its really easy to get sloppier and slopper…at least for me, with a new baby and with it being quite socially acceptable here. But one of my resolutions is to dress better … I hope I can follow through.

January 31, 2016 at 7:45 pmI know it’s common in the US, but I hate the look of sportswear worn as casual clothes. Awful.
