Weekend Update

1. I recently placed a small order with Loft, which was actually quite successful, though I ended up sadly returning most of the items however, as part of my wardrobe resolutions (see #3). The one item I did keep, which I would recommend quite wholeheartedly, is this little pleated flippy dress, currently 40% off (under $50!). It’s very, very cute.

This little dress was so comfortable and I thought would be very versatile for throughout the year, so I kept it. I’ll wear it with tights in the winter, and then with bare legs come spring. It can be dressed up for work, and also worn casually. And, I machine washed it, put it in the dryer, and it came out like new (and the skirt kept its pleats). That makes it a winner for me!

One thing I’d note is that this is not a sweater dress – the material is more like that of a thick tee (which I prefer). Also, the fit is loose-ish…I bought a Petite XS and it fits on me like it does on the model, which is loose and comfortable. If you like a fitted look, I’d go a size smaller.

2. Have you ever purchased from Kit and Ace? I haven’t, but have heard of the company due to the Lululemon connection. This was an interesting article, via Slate, about what “technical cashmere” may actually consist of. I always check labels myself…I’ve been fooled before by a “cashmere blend” sweater, only to find that’s only 10% or so of the content.

3. Complaining about Silicon Valley may be an activity I suspect is most enjoyed by other residents of the Bay Area, but I still thought I’d share this article – What’s Eating Silicon Valley. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

4. I really like the articles and videos I’ve seen with Caroline De Maigret, even though I’m still not quite sure what she does, other than be a glamorous Parisian. But isn’t that enough, most of the time? I enjoyed this video with her, via i-D – I love anybody fabulous who still has a sense of humor about themselves.

5. A book I have been meaning to recommended is Leaving Berlin. I finished the last week of 2015 and it was fantastic! I love a good fiction and also a good spy novel, and this was a great combination of both.

Leaving Berlin

Leaving Berlin is set in East Germany after WWII has ended, and I found myself learning a lot about the general time period and the politics of Germany during this time frame, as well as being engrossed in the actual plot. I wasn’t able to predict how the novel would end. The writing was very strong, and I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended.

I would never buy kit and ace for full price but on sale I see them as good quality basics. They also have some 100% cashmere items which are nice.

Have you ever tried Brooks Brothers cashmere? If so, any thoughts? They’re currently having a great sale, and I’m tempted to pick up a few items.

No I haven’t! My mom used to buy it, and she said that she was disappointed awhile ago, so I never tried. I have heard good things from her about the Black ? Fleece line, but the prices are scary high! I think you just probably have to pick and choose your pieces, same as with brands like Banana Republic, etc.

I love clothing from Kit and Ace! I live in Vancouver currently (though I’m headed to SF soon) and find that the blend of materials is perfect for the Vancouver climate. I agree with the vast majority that the brand’s price tags for items that consist of usually <11% cashmere with cotton/viscose are a bit outrageous but the current sale that is going on makes for a good excuse to make a first purchase.

Let me know if you want any recommendations for shirts to try =)

P.S. I've followed your blog for years now and this is my first post! I hope you and your family are doing well.

Just catching up on your recommendations. That SV article resonates so much. Well, partly because we live nearby but aren’t part of the tech boom, and partly because we’re raising the next generation.

You might enjoy Winter Men by Jesper Bugge Kold. It’s well-written but I haven’t finished it yet because I have such strong feelings about the time period and as one reviewer said, it’s haunting.
