Weekend Update

1. On the topic of cashmere (from my last post)…have any of you heard of or had experience with this brand, Fabiana Filippi? I was told by an Italian friend to check them out, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a good selection at Nordstrom.

Filippi’s designs really remind me of a cross between Loro Piana and Brunello Cucinelli – great neutral colors, classic designs, and can work for a whole spectrum of ages. I love this hooded cardigan but its already sold out of my size. I’ll be keeping an eye out on this brand and will probably try it out…now the question is whether to wait for sale!

2. I am definitely not a gourmet cook (I may not even qualify for even the most elementary levels of the term “cook”), but even I found this article via The Guardian – Five Simple Dishes and the Mistakes You’re Making With Them, to be quite helpful and interesting.

3. I always end up finding some great articles in the WSJ – last weekend I enjoyed this Sensible Guide to Buying Hot Fashion Trends. I must be really out of the loop, I had no idea these furry Guccis were even a trend!

Speaking of the WSJ, have any of you been following the Theranos controversy? It really seems that the paper did a fantastic job of reporting for this piece…it’s been fascinating following along the daily developments.

4. My reading this week – The Memoirs of Cleopatra, by Margaret George.

memoirs

I always enjoy historical fiction, especially well written ones where I really feel like I’m learning not just about a person, but also the period. I’m about halfway through Memoirs (Cleopatra is still with Caesar), and am looking forward to traveling through the rest of her life. And, by the way… I really, really want to go to Egypt now too. Whose been?

I’m so glad you brought up Filippi cuz I was wondering the same thing how does it compare to Cucinelli. If you will eventually try some of their cashmere items, I would love to hear your review on it.

I think the furry Guccis are ridiculous. I would never splurge on something like that. In today, out tomorrow!
I am a classic buyer all the way. I am on the fence these days about Gucci. It’s either great or terrible!

I agree with Whitney Farris – the Guccis are hideous!

Gucci and Fendi were old furriers – their mission is to find use for the despicable fur trade and make it appear ‘fashionable’ – any place any weather. Hence the fendi monsters and other curiosities, wasting the planets resources…and making the wearer appear ridiculous to boot.

Very interesting tidbit about Gucci being a furrier I had no idea. I know that you have very strong feelings about fur, and I respect your passion.

I have also just discovered Fabiana Fillipi last week in Lithuania as I was there on the business for a day and fell in LOVE (but didn’t have a time to try anything on) So I headed to the shop in London today…. I loved most things and everything feels luxurious but
    a) price in £ was more expensive then I can remember in euros

    b) I’m not sure if buying a jumper for £500 is reasonable (I do own Hermes bags and Chanel Items, somehow I do think that those brands are strong and established to charge as much, even tho my husband thinks its crazy) but for the brand that I have resonantly just discovered … not sure….

I have been thinking about it over and over again … Is it worth it?

Thanks for the review Sanita! I understand your apprehension about jumpers…I guess sometimes fabric seems like its less precious than leather, etc. Please update if you buy anything!

    Hi
Am having trouble reading the full article on Theranos controversy without having to subscribe. Is there a way to access the full article?
    Thanx

Here is a trick – Google “WSJ Theranos” and you should be able to find a link to the article. Click from there and it’ll allow you to read the whole article 🙂
