Hello! A quick weekend update today…we passed baby Feather’s two week mark this week and now he’s apparently entered the fussy stage! I spend a lot of my free time these days on Amazon, reading reviews for swaddle blankets and searching for other baby magic tricks…anyway…
I receive requests for outerwear recommendations and reviews quite a bit, and today I wanted to share my friend’s trench that she wore to my place a few evenings ago – I was really impressed to hear that it was $150, and from Topshop!
The perfect trench varies from person to person, but I love this one because it’s a darker shade of beige (which I prefer over the lighter tones), and in person it’s fitted but can be worn open for a more casual, “slouchy” look. Recommended, at least to try, if you’re looking for an affordable trench.
2. I loved this first person column by Dominique Browning – I’m Too Old For This, via the NY Times. I printed it out and re-read it sometimes late at night when I’m stressing about dumb things.
3. Quite a few of you may have already read this article about the”challenges” of working for Amazon via the NY Times, but if not, its definitely worth a look. Do you know anyone who works at Amazon? I know quite a few…and I’d say their feedback fairly mirrors what the article describes.
4. I’m finding myself going through books at a fast clip these days, since swiping through my Kindle is pretty much all I can easily do while nursing. I came across an old favorite the other day – Slammerkin, by Emma Donoghue.
Some of you might recognize Emma Donoghue as the author behind the bestseller Room – which by the way I also loved. The first book I ever read by her though was actually Slammerkin, because it was randomly recommended to me by the cashier of our local bookshop (which has sadly closed). It tells the story of a young girl in 17th century England – how she finds herself in prostitution, and then how she is able to leave it. For some reason I love reading novels about this period in London – all of the glamour and wealth, alongside the enormous poverty and struggle. There’s always something to learn and an underdog to root for. I’d say that if you liked books like The Other Boleyn Girl or Forever Amber, I’d give Slammerkin a try.

I and all my friends, of course, are all thrilled that you are posting as much as you are post-baby holding off our inevitable FF-withdrawal for a bit 😉 What a great post!
I now have two books on my to-read list- thank you! And those articles, as all your articles are were so interesting!
On a completely frivolous side note, I forgot to mention during the sale when things went to 60 off for C shoes, I saw their ballet flat with the leather camellia on it with the tiny gold interlocking C’s on one of the petals (if you google “C black leather camellia flats” it should show images) on sale for 290 or 390!!! It was nuts! It was a steal at that price and yes, I bought one for my best friend – she will be getting it for her bday soon (hopefully I didn’t just ruin her surprise – lol).

I would recommend the Happiest Baby on the Block book for new mothers if u don’t already have it. It’s got so much practical information such as burping and swaddle technics to how to set a sleep/eating schedule for babies.
I remember being glued to the rocking chair the first couple of months of my son’s life (he’s 2 now) and the First Time Mommy Group was a life saver! There are something like 4k first time
Moms in the group and I had so many of my ‘weird’ questions answered by fellow new moms. It’s very informative and a great support group.

I read the article about Amazon – what a horrible place to be. I’m probably too spoilt but I cannot imagine why would people want to work there; I know the article is trying to explain that they are almost addicted to this but I really can’t imagine how is that even possible:)

August 24, 2015 at 9:48 pmNot sure if you live close enough, but the mother’s group run by Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto is fantastic. It is moderated, meets once a week, and I found it invaluable. I also made some very good friends there.

August 26, 2015 at 12:34 pmCongrats on the 2 week mark!!! Probably early but you should look into the zipadee-zip when he starts breaking out of his swaddle and starts rolling in 3.5 months. Its shaped like a starfish and it helps the startle reflex and waking themselves up.
