Weekend Update

1. Today I’d like to share more item that I forgot to put on my holiday wish list – fun, beautiful holiday party shoes!

These are totally the kind of shoes you would buy for your own wedding and then use for lots of fun parties afterwards. My own wedding shoes were black lace, so I never picked up my sparkly pair – these from Jimmy Choo would be perfect.

2. A really interesting article from Business Week: Why Michael Kors Can’t Afford to Cut Prices to Spark Holiday Sales. Do you all think the trend of MK’s retail domination will continue? This is one of my favorite brands to watch.

3. Did any of you shop at Delia’s when you were growing up (if you don’t even remember Delia’s, then you are too young and probably are using Snapchat right now…). I remember being so excited for the catalogs and then mailing away for the items. My favorite Delia’s memory is one of my best friends ordering her prom dress from the catalog, and then it arriving and looking beautiful on her. All for something like $79 full price.

I was thus sad to hear that Delia’s was actually shutting down, via NY Mag – if you read, please also share if you have fond Delia’s memories!

4. I feel a bit sheepish whenever I recommended a huge bestseller on here, but I really wanted to hear any opinions on this week’s reading for me –  Outlander.

Outlander

I’ve actually had this series sitting on my shelf for years and for some reason, could never get into it. I finally gave it another go on my flight to New York, after my friend kept going on and on about the dude that plays “Jamie” in the Starz series. Anyway, once I started, I found myself quickly going through the whole first book of the series, Outlander  – it was really good! I’m glad that I tried again.

I’m about midway through Dragonfly in Amber however, and I don’t know if I’m going to make it through. I’m losing interest and it’s seems to be veering further away from Game of Thrones and more towards 50 Shades of Gray in some scenes.

Have any of you read this series, and do you have any recommendations or thoughts? Should I stick it out?

My mother in law bought those JImmy Choos for our wedding and I loved them on her! She said they were comfortable and now they are her “go to” pair for big parties.

I started the Outlander series ages ago, so have forgotten most of the details now. But I remember at the time, I loved the first four books of the series. I remember waiting for The Fiery Cross to come out and was disappointed. Mainly because I loved Claire and Jamie’s story so much, but the fifth book veered away from them. I do hope you continue as I would love to hear your thoughts.

    HI Katherine,

I just wondered what happened to the interview posts? I loved them a lot and I feel that they was more inspirational to us.

    thank you

I bought the blue dress in #5 for my 8th grade dance. Somehow no one else had it even though it was the awesomest dress from Delias at the time:

I was actually just thinking about it the other day and wondering what happened to it.

How great was it coming home from school and finding a new Delias? Le sigh…

Ooooh, you might be seriously enabling me on those shoes. I was looking at a similar pair for my wedding this March, and those ones are really pretty….

I first read Dragonfly in Amber when I was 14 (23 years ago). I really enjoyed reading about a relationship after the I Do’s and Happily Ever After’s. I also love the Jamie character. I then went back and read the first book, Outlander. I have since read the rest of the series over the years but honestly didn’t really like the storyline after the first two books. My favorite is Dragonfly in Amber so I hope you can stick it out to finish that one but personally wouldn’t reccomend any of the ones after that.

I’ve recently attended a charity dinner/auction/writer’s reception with the author, Diana Gabaldon. Although I respect her writing, she didn’t come across as a very um, approachable or engaging person. She was polite and courteous but seemed somewhat bored and “above it all”, also slightly condescending towards her fans. Just my own opionion. Although it was a disappointing night (meeting a writing idol to then learn that she’s not likeable in real life), I got my books signed so I was happy enough.

Anyway, that’s my experience. Hope that helps! 🙂

P.S. Surprisingly, I’ve met Martha Stewart in real life and she did not disappoint. She was awesome. LOL. It goes to show, you never know about people.

Hi thanks so much for sharing your experience with the books! That’s disappointing to hear that about the author but way better news to hear about Martha, LOL. I’m a huge fan!

I really liked Outlander but am forcing myself to finish Dragonfly in Amber chapter by chapter. I almost stopped as soon as the incredibly cliche Count of St Germain made an appearance but people keep telling me the books get better again.Your Fifty Shades reference was spot on! And you’ve reminded me I need to read the Game of Thrones series. I just downloaded a new vampire Lestat novel, the first in many years.

OMG I agree about the Count. And then he just goes just like that (unless he’s resurrected later…). I saw the new Lestat novel out, please share how you like it!

Unfortunately the Count came back to the story so I left. Lestat, while not terribly well written, is a great character. I was distracted by Thanksgiving, the sales, and studying the guide for my new camera so have stopped reading but will finish Lestat when time permits.

I’m not sure I am ready for Outlander but I have just finished and enjoyed one of your recommendations earlier this year – Dear Leader. It was an eye-opener for me as I was very ignorant of Korean internal politics. Thanks for the tip. Susan, London
