Weekend Update

1. Today I thought I would share my favorite new hair product with all of you – this awesome John Frieda Hot Air Brush, which I recently picked up for under $30 on Amazon (you can also find it at Target if you need instant gratification or a good return policy).

This little tool is a superhero! It gives a great “blow out” look and even a styling dunce like me can master it (though okay, maybe my hair looks ~80% as good as when my stylist blows it out…which I still consider a miracle). Less damaging to your hair than a hair straightener or curler and easier to maneuver than a hair dryer + round comb.

A little note on usage – I dry my hair about halfway first, and then use this to finish up the rest. Goes way faster.

2. While hunting for a very specific picture of Kate Moss the other day, I came across this cute little article on Grazia with Kate’s “Seven Fashion Commandments”, straight from Ms. Moss. For any fan of the very great Kate!

3. I thought this was a very intriguing (though in my opinion far too short) article from The Business of Fashion – “The Trouble With Second Hand Clothes”. I know that so often I donate bags and bags of clothes, never really thinking about where they go – just assuming that they’re going to a good place.

4. Actually, if you liked the article above about second hand clothing, then I would recommend Elizabeth Cline’s Overdressed, which I first read several years ago and recently picked up again.

The book didn’t grab me the way that say, Deluxe did (and there are quite a few typos which always surprises me in a real, live, book), but it does raise some very interesting questions about the nature of “fast fashion” and consumption. For me personally, it didn’t necessarily stop me from buying all fast fashion – it just made me think twice about buying so much of it, instead of a few items (whether expensive or cheap) that I really enjoy. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Have a wonderful weekend!

‘Overdressed’ is a good easy read, I actually found it better than ‘deluxe’ which was a bit wooly in places. ‘To Die For: Is Fashion Wearing Out the World?’ by Lucy Siegle is also very good, with lots of good research behind it.

Hi Sharon, I hope you like it! Try to watch some YouTube videos first to see how others are using it, that helped me 🙂

No, but I’m going to give it a try anyway in Europe LOL…I’ll report back on how it survives!

Hi! I love this hot air brush but I am looking for a dual voltage type when I travel to Paris soon. How was this on your trip to Europe?? Do you have any other recommendations for styling your hair when traveling? By the way, can you do a post about how you style your long hair when traveling? Thanks!

Hi Katherine,I’ve been following your blog for several months now and finally decided to sent you a message. First off, I really enjoy your posts on travel, clothing tips and just your humor is really great! Your posts about your dad is great, and the needling of mr. Feather is quite humorous. But what got me to post is because I wanted to thank you for recommending this John Frieda curling wand. I ran out and purchased it and I really like it. Much easier than styling with a brush and dryer. Takes a bit getting used to but I love it. But thank you so much and continue with your wonderful posts!!
