The One(s) That Got Away

Sometimes on this site, I think I focus on eliminating/reducing items in my closet (well that’s really just because I have quite a bit still)….aka talking about the items that I shouldn’t have/wished I hadn’t purchased. Today I thought I would talk about an “opposite” topic…a few items that I wish I had picked up, but never did (and now they’re gone forever). I’d love to hear yours!

kate moss chanel cardi

1. Chanel 11C (cruise) cashmere cardigan. Oh, I love this cardigan so much. In all colors, red, navy and white. I didn’t have the crazy Chanel sale ninja training that I have since been provided, and never snagged this one (not to mention that the smaller sizes mostly sold out at full price). It’s perfection. If they made another one now, I’d snap it up in a heartbeat!

2. Aritzia eyelet dress. I couldn’t find a picture of this dress, but years and years ago Aritzia made a few amazing eyelet items that I loved. They were perfect – buttoned down the front, super flattering, all cotton, stretched to fit. They had a top version, and a dress, both in white and black. So I bought a white top, a black dress, and wanted to buy the black top and a white dress, but left those on the shelf. “I’ll find another version I like better later on,” I said to myself.

Well…it’s been more than five years, and I’ve now worn both out, and I still can’t find a better version. My top and dress are both stretched out and drabby. But I can’t throw them out yet, and Aritzia hasn’t made anything similar since (plus whenever I go, I end up shopping next to pre-teens…).

Jimmy Choo Black Suede Private

3. Jimmy Choo black suede “Private” sandals. I have these in nude patent, and they are still one of my favorite pair of sandals ever. Super tall and quite comfortable as well. I thought they were a classic that Jimmy Choo would just carry on season after season, forever and ever, but I should have realized that danger signs were coming when they started to discount even the classic colors. I didn’t jump on the black suede fast enough and poof! They were gone. What’s even worse is there are still some pairs 50% off on The Outnet, taunting me, but they don’t have my size and my heart was always set up on the suede.

Because of my scare with the black Privates, I recently picked up a pair of black patent Saint Laurent Tributes – these are still my other favorite “comfortable” sky high sandals, and I’m not letting these be discontinued without picking up all my staple classic colors!

All right, now how about all of you? What are some of the shoes, bags, clothes – that have gotten away?

This post is funny. 🙂 I don’t have any specific items that got away, but I wish I had started buying designer items before all the ridiculous price hikes of recent years that seem inversely correlated with product quality. I can’t believe how much affordable (relatively – ha!) Chanel used to be!

I have really old tears from when saks/neimans used to do those phone book sized catalogs. In the early 2000s a Chanel bag was around $700 usd.

I missed out on a Hermes dress @ a palm beach thrift store, I’ve since learned the name of the print. Other things I feel like I missed out on, now I feel were silly that I wanted it.

YES! I found one of those catalogs the other day actually, when I ripped out a Chanel bag…it was a classic flap, at $1400! Painful.

This is easy. I was shopping for my first CDC. I tried on the ombre lizard and…..didn’t get it! I don’t remember why. Perhaps I had just spent $$ on something else and wasn’t ready. Needless to say, it disappeared forever and I die a thousand deaths every time I see a modeling shot of one. The brown gator I ended up getting later is lovely, but no where near the ombre in Wow Factor.

I have the ombre and I love it, but don’t worry as I think Hermes always releases something cool just around the corner… 🙂

Katherine — been lurking for a while and wanted to say I love your site and your thoughtful commentary on a wide array of topics!

All of my regrets center around sample sales…back when The Row was still under the radar, I went to their first-ever sample sale and bought a champagne silk maxi slip dress for $80 — I almost bought it in black too, but didn’t (third picture in the link below). I wish I’d bought the whole sale! The chance to get The Row at those prices is gone, gone, gone.

For that Chanel cardigan, have you tried looking at resale sites like TheRealReal? I know I’ve seen some similar pieces on there. You never know, it might come up! 🙂

Wow it is gorgeous!! The price was amazing. I do check RealReal sometimes but it drives me crazy as I always end up just missing the items. Augh!

Also thanks so much for commenting and your kind words !
