The Other Woman: The Wardrobe

Plane travel is when I get to catch up on all the bad movies that I didn’t have the conscience to actually pay for in theaters, but secretly wanted to watch. On our way to Australia, I caught a movie which I ended up being very happy not having had paid for – The Other Woman – which while lacking greatly in its various cinematic qualities, at least had a great wardrobe for Cameron Diaz. Actually, I usually like Cameron’s wardrobe in movies (watch for some more features on her) – like Jennifer Aniston, she knows what looks great on her and always looks well turned out on screen. In The Other Woman, she has a great mix of both professional and casual looks.

Anyway – I went through the movie again and picked out some of my favorite looks. I also was able to supplement some with a few promotional stills from the movie, as well as some paparazzi shots of Cameron during filming (ironically these sometimes show the outfits in the most clarity). Enjoy!

The first scene – Cameron in a little black dress. Those looking for a similar silhouette can find one from Alexander Wang ($210) with a contour seam and banded edging.

The Other Woman 0

Opening credits, we see Cameron casually turned out in an off the shoulder white top and cuffed jeans.

The Other Woman 1

This is one of those outfits that seems so simply and easy, yet somehow it can be difficult to pull off if you don’t have the exact pieces. I think you need the perfect off the shoulder top and it all comes together. My favorite version is from Velvet – tons of colors and super comfortable.

The Other Woman 2

More opening credits – this time in a floral dress which I recognized as Isabel Marant. Unfortunately this dress was from several seasons back, so I found a nice casual striped tshirt dress in cotton jersey from Petit Bateau instead!

The Other Woman 3

Next, a paparazzi shot of Cameron walking out of her office onto the street for a scene. I had a pretty good still from the movie but I can’t beat the quality of the paps!

I like her tie blouse + pencil skirt + Louboutin combination a lot. For a very similar blouse, I’d check out this one from Vince Camuto ($89), and for a simple and super comfortable knit pencil skirt, try this one from Eileen Fisher ($158).

Her bag is the Sac de Jour tote from Saint Laurent ($3290), which also comes in a variety of fun colors and sizes (like this grained crossbody micro version, $1900).

Her pumps were Louboutin, though a an earlier season – I love, love these all black spiked Louboutins and think that they would go very well with her outfit here!

Next, dinner on the terrace wearing a very little nude slipdress. Honestly this is the kind of dress that you could go less expensive on in my opinion, although paired with killer shoes and accessories of course. This is a great option from ASOS, and it’s currently on sale under $21!

The Other Woman 7

A close up on her jewelry – throughout the movie Cameron wears almost exclusively yellow gold. This particular necklace is a lovely gold lariat from Lana Jewelry.

The Other Woman 8

Next, back in the office in a red shift dress with flowing sleeves. I like this version from Harlyn, on sale for around $110. I do think that this is the type of dress you need to spring for better quality fabric (silk, nice wool, a good blend) – it’ll be noticeable.

The Other Woman _9

Next, another office look, with a sleek black jacket and a gold ball chain necklace. I think her necklace is from Jennifer Fisher.

For a similar black jacket, I love this tux version from Helmut Lang.

The Other Woman 10

I love the idea of pairing a traditional suited wool black jacket with a leather pencil skirt. This is a great one from Halogen, with a nice little front slit, now on sale for $165. Note that you can also see see this whole outfit on the film’s poster, earlier in the post.

The Other Woman 11

Next, one of my favorite looks from the movie – a collarless white suit jacket over a collared silk blouse, tucked into black trousers. A very professional but also modern and chic look. This is a beautiful version of the jacket from Chloe, though this blazer, at $90 from Topshop, is at a much friendlier price point.

The next look – a white vest/gold belt/navy skirt combination dress by Martin Grant with lots of pretty gold jewelry.

The bag is from Valextra, and I love the look with crisp white Louboutin pumps. I like this cream/lace Louboutin pair (somehow that red flashing really looks great with white/beige), and also this pair, better priced at $345, from Sophia Webster.

The Other Woman 15

The Other Woman 16

Next, casual in a loose yellow tank dress and the same gold jewelry we saw earlier. Tanned blondes in my opinion always look amazing in yellow!

The Other Woman 19

Another casual look – this time in a loose cotton sweater. This types of sweaters always scream ” beach house” to me – here’s a similar one, from Heartloom.

The Other Woman 21

Next – a close up of her jewelry, including a stack of rings including a Cartier pave trinity!  Love this look!

The Other Woman 22

Next – a pretty ikat print dress under a loose white blazer. I like this ikat dress, in blue tones from Anthropologie – plus it transitions easily with boots for fall.

The Other Woman 23

Another casual look, this one a leopard print blouse with white denim. My favorite leopard print blouse right now is this one from Loft, priced at under $60 – the navy blue/black makes it a little more interesting.

The Other Woman 25

A casual top and bottom from Balenciaga topped with an always cool looking panama hat (check out this one from BP, under $24).

The Other Woman 29

And finally, one of the last scenes of the movie, with Cameron in a very nice sleeveless black dress. I love this version by Jil Sander, though this Ellen Tracy also looks great, and is under $120 with lots of good reviews.

I was on a denim jacket hunt earlier, so I can also share that Kate Upton’s jacket is from Current Elliott.

The Other Woman 30

And that concludes my wardrobe recap of The Other Woman! Lessons learned?

1. Find the right jewelry tones for you. Like I said earlier, I’ve noticed Cameron Diaz’s wardrobe in several movies (which I plan on covering), and in each one, she’s always seen wearing yellow gold. It just looks amazing on her skin. I believe that rose gold looks best on me, though I like wearing all three tones. And in my opinion, there isn’t always necessarily a single objective view of what looks better on you – it’s more what you personally think looks best. I recently met a designer who told me that she only wore silver tones, because “looking at the contrast against her skin made her happy”.

2. White can be worn year round in the workplace. Whenever I visit New York in the winter, I feel like I’m in a sea of black and grays in all of the office buildings. And having lived in the equally cold climate of Boston, I can definitely see why – it’s cold, it’s dark, so you gravitate towards dark tones. Plus the ground can get sludgy and nobody wants to be wearing white pants in that situation. But a little white wool jacket, or even a cream coat on cold, non-sludgy winter days, looks so refreshing to me as office wear. My favorite looks in the whole movie are when Cameron is wearing her little white collarless blazer – I think it looks professional, yet stands out as extra chic compared to all the women and men in black suits surrounding her.

3. Sexy doesn’t have to be obvious. I think in almost every single one of Cameron’s outfits above would be considered a knockout on any first date. She looks confident and appealing. But nothing she wears is super revealing, tight, or short/low cut. Instead, they’re simply items that highlight her best attributes, which fit perfectly, and drape nicely. And she wears them with total and utter confidence, which is what gives all of these outfits that extra “oomph”!

Cameron is the same height as me (I wish the rest were the same) so I paid extra attention. Bought the Jil Sander dress, thanks!

Hi Katherine, I saw this movie on Netflix but I wasn’t interested. I might have to watch it now for the fashion. I always thought Cameron dresses well. Btw, I sent you an email about handbags. Perhaps it’s in your spam box, hopefully you have time to reply. Thanks!

    hi kat,
Been meaning to post for years, finally plucked up the courage! Love you on the forum but especially here on your blog. I”m a huge fan.
I saw this movie with a girlfriend and we enjoyed it just for the fluff that it was. Nothing more nothing less. I like Cameron Diaz and always zero in on your jewellery choices in her movies – like you said, almost always yellow gold and in particular Cartier. I also loved the clothing choices for her character in The Holiday.
Could i please make a suggestion that when you are linking to websites for clothing suggestions/hints that the link opens into a new window? Not sure if others are experiencing having to go back and forth like me.

Hi, thank you so much! I remember the Holiday 🙂 I’m so sorry that you are having troubles with the link – I do it that way so people can have the choice to right click in a new window if they want, or if they don’t want, to just travel from my page. I know it’s inconvenient for the people who wish that links would open in a different page…I haven’t found a solution yet. I will try and adjust the links in the future though manually 🙂

I feel like wardrobe-wise, Cameron definitely won that contest in this movie… but admittedly her apartment left me drooling for ages… so modern and chic.

The movie itself? Glad I rented it and didn’t see it in theaters, but it still exceeded my expectations!

To be honest I wasn’t very wowed by the fashion in this film. I think Cameron had her best ‘fashion on film’ moments in the 90s in My Best Friend’s Wedding and of course, There’s Something About Mary. I was watching the latter film recently and was stuck by how fresh and beautiful the clothes still look.
