Weekend Update

1. I recently shared these Cole Haan sandals as part of a sale PSA (they’re currently 33% off!), but I thought I would share my own picture of them as well.

I bought these as a casual sandal that I could get away with as a “work” sandal, and they’ve been perfect. They have enough height to make a difference, but are comfortable enough that I can wear them all day and run around the office. I would call them a sandal version of the Ferragamo Vara pump, my go to closed toe comfortable work shoe.

The espadrille wedge and rubber sole adds more comfort in my opinion. I can see these lasting through several summers of very heavy wear.

2. Someone sent me this article awhile ago, and I’ve had it bookmarked in Chrome for years. I finally clicked on it while cleaning out all my old shopping links (I know others out there must suffer from shopping bookmark clutter), and printed it out. There’s a lot of great recipes and all perfect for summer! Summer Express: 101 Simple Meals via the NY Times.

Alhambra trio

3. Another older article from the NY Times – but an interesting read, especially for anyone who is a Van Cleef fan (me!), about the famous Alhambra line, Coming Up Clover. Are they more “popular” where you live? I still love my Alhambra and wouldn’t hesitate to add more, but I do feel a little odd when I’m walking down the street and someone else has the exact same thing. Good thing there are many combos out there of these clovers!

4. I recently finished a fantastic book, Dear Leader – Poet, Spy, Escapee, by the former poet laureate of North Korea, Jang Jin-Sung.

Jang Jin-Sung_Dear_Leader

This was one of the best books I’ve read this year, and a fascinating and very well written book about the rise and reign of Kim Jong Il, and of North Korea in general. Dear Leader is obviously a translation, but Jang Jin-Sung’s beautiful writing shines through. His high political rank also meant that he had an incredibly unique and up close and personal insight into one of the most secretive nations in the world. Highly, highly recommended.

I want to say that even though all your entries are superb and interesting to read (especially the interviews!), your Friday entries are hands down my favorite. I love that you touch upon different aspects of life, culture, and style/fashion. I really do look forward to reading them each Friday 🙂

Thanks for mentioning the book – not at all the sort of read I would look out for, but this caught my eye and I ordered on Kindle. Only a couple of chapters in since last night but greatly enjoying and finding jaw-droopingly informative. Susan, London

Funny that you put up this article. I was thinking of buying my first VC&A item this weekend. I’m still debating which one to get, since we don’t have a store nearby and I have to phone order it. I’m thinking of buying the sweet necklace in carnelian (I’m not sure of the spelling.. The red one). I wonder if it would be ok as the necklace by itself, not as a set. I’m a neutral person so I’m wondering if the red would be too bold. Anyways, now since you mention it does seem to be more common these days. Any suggestion on my first purchase? I guess I might purchase more in the future, but for now this will be it for a while. By the way, sorry I haven’t been posting replies more often. I just started working in a long time and have been swamped. Even though I’m tired all the time, it does feel to be back. Love your blog so much! -B-

Hi B, thanks so much. I hope you get a nice break from your work soon!

The sweet necklace is lovely and I think it will be a good piece that you can wear by itself or layered. My only caution is some do find the sweets a little shorter, if that is the case with you you can always ask to have it extended by VCA or buy an extender yourself.

Another option would be a single alhambra from the regular line which would have a little bigger “impact”.
