1. I haven’t had time to take photos of this on yet, but before it gets too warm I wanted to share my favorite new little black jacket, via Helmut Lang, that I purchased as a comfortable but still dressy alternative to the classic black blazer for work.
I love my Helmut Lang “Villous” sweatshirt that I’ve now had for close to two years, but a sweatshirt is a sweatshirt, and the material is undeniably in the hoodie family.
I didn’t expect this Helmut Lang “Sonar” blazer to be almost as comfortable – but it is! The fabric is a super soft wool, very cozy – yet the jacket is still fully lined, with functioning buttons at the wrists. It’s dressy enough to take formal meetings in, and you can drape it multiple ways.
I adore this blazer and it’s one of those really comfortable, easy pieces that you can wear to work and also throw on over a dress. One of my favorite Helmut Lang purchases to date.
2. Last week I shared a very long Vanity Fair article about the Murdoch/Deng scandal, and this week I’m back with yet another Vanity Fair gossipy and long read – this time about the Sergey Brin/Google Glass affair mess. An interesting read on several levels (romance! our mortality!) and one that’s set in my own backyard… though the most exciting scandal going on in my life right now is a defection from my former favorite beef noodle soup house after a change of chefs.
3. I’ve been asked a few times about my favorite t-shirts brands. I am a t-shirt maniac and re-stock on my favorite whites and stripes every year (I don’t count white plain t-shirt replacements in my 25 a year goal…is that cheating?).
I am partial to v-necks as that is what works best for me – with that in mind, my two favorite t-shirt brands are J.Crew, and Splendid.
J.Crew is my #1 pick because each season they typically offer a few classic t’s, in various weights and fabrics. The one I like usually ends up being a little more expensive – I like softer cotton and/or cotton and linen blends. This season, I like the vintage cotton v-neck – a mainstay they usually have each year.
For long sleeves, I haven’t been able to find one I like at the usual suspects – instead, my favorites are usually from Splendid or James Perse. This year, I love this little scoop neck from Splendid – a very nice weight for layering in winter, but still light enough for spring/summer.
Please share your favorite t-shirt brands, by the way!
4. I recently re-read an old favorite of mine – Gunn’s Golden Rules, by Project Runway’s Tim Gunn.
This is a delightful little book full of funny and gossipy anecdotes about the fashion industry (Anna Wintour being carried down the stairs! J.Crew gives lifetime discount cards out!). Besides all the good gossip however, the book is also incredibly easy to read, and well written, with plenty of good advice for “making it work” in life. I would highly recommend this for any fan of fashion, Tim Gunn, or both.

March 21, 2014 at 11:53 amI highly recommend Everlane’s line of Ryan tees. Their regular tees are okay, but the Ryan tees are so soft and drape really well. And the price is awesome too!

March 21, 2014 at 1:47 pmI have yet to try Everlane! Thanks for the recommendation.

March 21, 2014 at 6:08 pmI, too, swear by J. Crew tees! The XXS fits petites well, and they also last season after season through many washes (no pilling!). I personally find Splendid a tad too delicate to wash.
By the way, we caught Tim Gunn during a taping of The Daily Show and he is everything you thought he would be like (in person). Fierce!

March 21, 2014 at 8:11 pmKatherine, I second the everlane suggestion. Great value and quality. Their cashmere shawls are awesome btw especially for the price

March 21, 2014 at 9:02 pmWhat a coincidence- I’m looking to replace my worn out tees this year and decided to splurge on a high quality brand. I stopped shopping at J. Crew long ago because frankly, the quality sucks. I’m not going to spend $30 on a tee shirt and have to replace it a year later because it’s got holes (personal experience with many basic items from the brand… I wonder if you’ve noticed it too or just got lucky over and over again?). I’d rather pay good money upfront and not worry about my next purchase for a good long while (is that too much to ask for?).
Have you heard anything about Theory, T by A. Wang, etc (James Perse is a no-go; his style doesn’t work with mine)? I’d greatly appreciate any suggestions other than J. Crew 🙂
P.S
Thanks to your recent bolide post, I’m going to get the bag after being on the fence about it. I hope the Vegas Hermes will have it since I’m off to the desert again soon 🙂

March 23, 2014 at 1:51 pmHi Anna! I hope you enjoy the Bolide, it’s one of my favorite H bag styles!
J.Crew has been really hit or miss for me. I’ve had good luck with their T-shirts. I haven’t heard to omuch about A.Wang tees vs. Theory but for the prices they should be OK! Maybe buy from a store with good exchange policies (like Nordstrom) in case they fall apart in the wash.

March 24, 2014 at 5:28 amHey Katherine,
Thanks for the Nordstrom suggestion! I completely forgot I could take a few brands out for a spin and return if things don’t work out. Gotta love Nordstrom!

March 24, 2014 at 9:26 pmYou should definitely try Vince t-shirts! They’re very soft and confortable and even though they’re pretty thin they last a long time!
Their long sleeved shirts are amazing as well, they’re pretty much the only ones i wear since i found them.
Btw, sometimes you can find them for amazing prices at Nordstrom Rack, so if you ever come across one, go inside and look!
Katherine
March 25, 2014 at 10:51 amThank you! I must go check for them, always love finding Vince on sale 🙂

March 24, 2014 at 9:49 pmwhat was your favorite beef noodle soup house? Mine is A&J in cupertino.
Katherine
March 25, 2014 at 10:54 amI like A&J, Liang, QQ in Milpitas, Noodle House (?) in Menlo Park, and that new place in Westfield center in SF even though it’s a little expensive! Also Sam Tung (sp?) in Japantown for their spicy noodle soup!

I really love your blog and it is totally my go to read for great classic style advice:). I love your style. It always suits you.
I adore the look of this jacket and decided to get it. I have to say it really is gorgeous and fits so great. I got it in small size and fits perfectly.
Thanks for recommending it.
P.S. Any suggestion for a light colored blazer/jacket? Cream, beige or blush. Thanks!!
Katherine
