The Power of Water

Last November while we were in Paris, I picked up something requested by a friend – a large bottle of Bioderma Crealine, a cleansing water. Now you can guess that this was a pretty good friend, because guess what? Once I was in line in the drugstore, I realized that this giant bottle meant that I was going to have to check a piece of luggage! A friend who you would check luggage for, is in my opinion…a very dear friend indeed.

Bioderma

I decided to try out a bottle for myself since I was already doomed to the checking my luggage, and am now a fan. I use my cleansing water daily! I just dribble some on a cotton pad, swipe all around my face (lingering a few seconds longer over my eyes to take off mascara), and then I’m done with cleaning. The best things about it?

1. You don’t have to wash it off after using it (though I usually do a light rinse). However, this feature means that…
2. It’s great for taking your makeup off on planes. I never use the water in the bathrooms to wash my face. It gives me nightmares (read this if you’d like to why).
3. It’s super gentle. It’s clear and basically feels like water! My face never feels tight or dry after using it, yet I see that it’s definitely removing the daily gunk (evidence is on my cotton pad).

Months of daily use and an unfortunate spill mean that my bottle is nearing the end. Bioderma it seems is a little more difficult to find in the U.S., and with the costs of ordering from an international website considered, I’ve decided to try out some new brands for now.

Based on a quick “dollar per ounce” analysis higher end brands and a perusal of reviews, the top two candidates look to be Lancome’s Micellar Cleansing Water, and Caudalie’s own version. There are also higher priced versions from Dior, and Darphin.

Are any of you out there fans of cleansing water? Please share your experiences and favorite brands (if any!).

Yes! I love this stuff. I haven’t found a better makeup remover. I end up buying it on Amazon, which is great and convenient.

If you’re ever in Canada, they sell Bioderma at all the Shoppers Drug Marts. I also really like the one from Sephora (Triple Action Cleansing Water)

All the French pharmacy brands make a pretty good micellar water! I like the one from La Roche-Posay, which you can get at CVS.

Oh yes! I saw it at Walgreens but remember the price was actually quite high. I might try that one out after the Lancome 🙂 Thank you for the reminder!

I have been using Bioderma Crealine for many many years now and love it! I stock them up every time I return to Hong Kong 🙂 Since I discovered Bioderma Crealine, I can’t use anything else!

    Hello, Katherine,
I hope this Monday finds you well 🙂 I must say, you ALWAYS select such interesting articles — this one about the water…I had my doubts about airplane water and have been too scared to research it but now you have confirmed my fears, lol! I hope people don’t drink the water let alone wash their face and particularly their eye areas with it (*shuddering*). Insert image of that flying star-n-rainbow commercial with the tag line, “the more you know.”

Bioderma is excellent and you are truly a generous friend to pick it up for your friend. Might I suggest a few more French Pharmacy items you might also enjoy? Homeoplasmine, Embryolisse, Avibon, Biafine, and Roger&Gallet soaps (makes for a great gift/stocking stuffer/host/hostess present for friends/family who are deeply into fragrances. I promise you, the next time you go and you pick up these items, even if you don’t keep it for yourself, if you have a makeup junkie friend, you can gift it to them and they will think you are just the most magnificent creature ever.

I would have also mentioned the following: Klorane, Lierac, La Roche Posay, Avene, and Vichy, but many larger DuaneReade drugstores carry them — and I am happy to send you anything from those mentioned since the DR near both my home and work carry all those lines.

Thanks for yet another great post!
    🙂

I like the KOH GEN DO Cleansing Spa Water (http://www.sephora.com/cleansing-spa-water-P294007). I’ve heard a lot of good reviews on bioderma – probably will try it when i am done with the koh gen do one.

Hi Kat, you can find this at some CVS as well as the Japanese markets in our area e.g. Mitsuwa and Nijiya (hit or miss). Pretty decent prices on Amazon as well.

I’ve been using Caudalie’s cleansing water for a couple of years and I really like it. It doesn’t remove waterproof eye makeup, but does a pretty good job with everything else. It has a light fragrance and leaves my skin feeling fresh – not tight or filmy. I haven’t tried any other cleansing waters so I can’t compare, but I’ve been happy with this one so I haven’t wanted to try any others. I recommend it.

I’ve been using Bioderma Crealine for about a year now…it’s quite easy to get through Amazon, so if it’s not much cheaper in Paris, I don’t think I’ll bring it home with me – I’ve got a list of other products to buy!

I also find it’s not that great with waterproof eye makeup – so I use the Crealine first, then go over my eyes with either Chanel or Lancome eye makeup remover – both work well with no rubbing.

It’s pretty good for me with eye makeup unless I wear a lot of liner, etc – then you are right, I need another remover!

    Dear Katherine,

the Bioderma Solution is the best! I use it too.
But very close to it – and I hope you can find it there – is the POND’S Cold Cream Cleanser.

    Warm greetings,
    Mel
