Weekend Update

As always, some of my favorite items and things to watch as we head into the weekend – have a wonderful one!

1. Some of my recent shawl/scarf additions that I’ve been enjoying. I have lots of black in my wardrobe, so black/red always matches very easily. I don’t know the design names, but both are from the last fall/winter Hermes season. (PS – here’s another shawl on my list that is beautiful, a bit reminiscent of some classic Hermes designs, in a soft cashmere/silk blend at 10% of the price).

Cashmere scarves

The large black on the left I found while casually browsing the San Francisco boutique one day, the little scarf on the right I may have temporarily lifted while rummaging through my mom’s closet. I normally wouldn’t purchase this size – it’s 90 cm, the same as the “regular” silk scarves – and I rarely wear my silk scarves. However, I’m finding the cashmere/silk fabric much easier to work with – it’s more casual in my opinion!

2. I occasionally receive questions about retirement and financial planning, a topic that I am grossly unqualified to give advice on.  I do have an interest in personal finance, and enjoy reading and watching stories about the topic. To that end, I wanted to share a great PBS documentary that I often pass along to friends asking for elementary 401k advice, The Retirement Gamble. It is a fascinating look at the retirement “industry” and not only gives a good overview of how you might choose to invest for your future, but gives plenty of good reason for why you might want to save in the first place.

3. I really enjoyed this brief interview with Jenna Lyons of J.Crew. Some unique answers and insights above and beyond the usual types of advice – “invest in accessories,” “work hard,” etc, etc.

4. Instead of a book today, I’m recommending a movie – the fantastic The Lives of Others. If you haven’t already seen it, I would highly recommend it. Yes it is more serious, yes it doesn’t have a traditional “happy ending”. But you won’t regret taking the time to watch this. Even my foreign film, unhappy ending loathing husband was a fan of the movie!

It’s a wonderful, wonderful film and I quite fancy Sebastian Koch now, that film made him my pin up.
The red/leopard scarf is stunning, I’ve never seen that print before.

OK now I wanna watch “the life of others” in English 😉 Saw it in German when it was released and thought it is a great movie, too. This story as shown in the movie might not be real but there must have been a lot of similar bitter fates in Eastern Germany in the past…

I think it would be the best to watch in German! It was just subtitled so no dubbing so not much of a difference 🙂

Hi Kat! For your interested readers (and because I am a closet Hermes scarf addict), the name of the shawl is Fleurs et Papillons de Tissus. The colorway that you picked is lovely and you wear it so well. I think you should give the 90cms another try, perhaps with a scarf ring, or worn a different way.

Just another vote for the film…and another recommendation: The Gatekeepers.

Beautiful scarves — I love how you wear the first one.

thank you for posting the Lyons interview. I know it’s bizarre thing to say in this day in age, that it’s actually refreshing for someone to say “You have to work extremely hard for everything.” And also when it comes to managing people, it’s not an easy job…creatives or not. Anything that deals with people is always going to be a challenge.

I was really pleasantly surprised by that interview – not just all of the “usual” answers. So glad you liked it!
