The Hermes GM Shawl

Hello! It’s been very rainy this week but there was finally some sun so I could show you a favorite shawl from Hermes.

I’m wearing what is called the “GM Shawl” – a blend of cashmere and silk that is very light and warm. I think the blend is 70% cashmere, 30% silk. I love Hermes silk patterns but for some reason have a hard time wearing their silk scarves, which is why I love their cashmere shawls – they have the same beautiful patterns and colors, yet are a lot easier to wear. Here is the pattern “Eperon D’Or” being worn as a regular scarf…

But looks can be deceiving – look at how large this bad boy really is! Sadly it’s almost as tall as me.

Since the shawl is so large, you can wear it in a variety of ways (some even wear it as a dress!). I tend to wear mine either as regular scarf or as a large shawl as you see above here. I also use it as a blanket.

I love a good shawl and I think it’s a great place to splurge in your closet. If you are going to “invest” in a more expensive shawl, I’d recommend going with either a Hermes GM or the classic Louis Vuitton Sprouse Leopard. I try to find ones that have lots of colors in their patterns that go with existing shades in my closet. There are also plenty of less expensive versions available every season at Zara, H&M, and my favorite place to find them – Nordstrom!

That one is beautiful. I'm also a fan of the cashmere silk blends. They're warmer and fall a little nicer. I suppose if I was in a warm climate I might think differently. One day!

I *ADORE* square scarves & shawls – the bigger the better (although I do have some smaller 25-28" squares too). Hermes indeed makes the most maginificent shawls… For 2012 I've been totally enamored by "Tendresse Feline," a beautiful cat-heavy desin (crazy cat lady in the house) – it's so gorgeous. I've also found really good vintage shawls and scarves on Etsy with really fun designs (e.g. a map of Paris), in great condition 🙂

I love your style. It is a lot like my own in the sense of a classic palette with quality high end accessories. I love that you have amazing items but very practical.

The shawl is amazing on you! I don't have one yet! I get blindsided by the 90cm silks or jersey silks. But when I see the catalog ads with this worn as a dress I can't keep my eye off of them!

What an amazingly timely post! I've actually been considering getting one of Hermes' cashmere/silk-blend shawls, as they're gorgeous, but I'm worried whether they're actually warm enough for me. As gorgeous as the shawls are, for me design is secondary to warmth, especially when I could get a Burberry cashmere blanket for roughly the same price (although that wouldn't be quite as travel-friendly …). Thoughts?

Hmm…I also have one of those Burberry cashmere blankets (actually I stole it from my mom), and even though I love it, I'd probably go for the GM Shawl. They are REALLY warm – more than you think probably, and easier to stuff in a bag for travel. Plus while I love Burberry sometimes I feel a little self conscious wearing a lot of the check pattern..such a shame!

I used to physically cringed when I saw the price tag of a Hermes shawl until I caved in and bought one. If I had to calculate cost per wear, it would be down to cents. They're absolutely beautiful and timeless.

I adore almost anything Hermes but sometimes it's hard for me to find shawl designs that I really like and work for my very boring wardrobe. I really like their cashmere/silk stoles, though. They tend to be simpler and I prefer the longer shape. You're rocking this shawl, though!

Love the Hermes shawl and agree, the silk ones can be harder to wear! I think it’s because they are not as soft as I would like, and they don’t drape as loosely. Having said that, anything Hermes I love!

shawl is stunning – but dont you think it clashes with the red bag? too much going on there. A plain etoupe bag would have been better… like a plume or a picotin orsomething

Hi Sophie – I think Etoupe is a great suggestion – and I’d love to add both a Plume and Picotin to my collection one day 🙂
