Sweets from Paris

In a transparent effort to gain further brownie points, my husband brought back some favorite sweets along with my Kelly when he returned from Paris. Below are three names that always bring joy: Pierre Herme, Laduree and Feodora.

Aren’t the boxes lovely? I love pretty packaging and containers and always keep them if I think I might have some ill defined use for them later – but now I probably have literally over twenty Laduree boxes in our apartment rattling around. Any suggestions for uses?

The goodies, unmasked. Pierre Herme is hands down my favorite macaron shop and I much prefer it to Laduree, which I know is blasphemy to some. Both are of course delicious but Herme just has more innovative flavors in my opinion. My favorites include Isaphan (rose, lychee and raspberry) Mogador (chocolate and passion fruit) and Mosaic (pistachio, cinnamon and cherries). Mogador is year round but the others are seasonal. That’s the only problem with Pierre Herme – they have a bunch of seasonal flavors which sometimes never come back. I spent an entire summer bothering the lone concession in Selfridges about a green tea matcha flavor I had a few years ago until they finally decided to dial up the Paris HQ, just to rid themselves of me. It wasn’t coming back that year 🙁

Finally, Feodora (the truffles to the right) is actually a German brand which can be found throughout Europe, and they make the most amazing egg liquor truffles for Easter – I am obsessed! It’s kind of like cookie dough batter that’s alcoholic on the inside, really dreamy. If you ever see these I’d encourage you to try them. I also have a soft spot for Feodora as one of their most popular and year round products are these chocolate cat tongues, which I find slightly eccentric.

Meow!

What are some of your favorite sweets to indulge in? And those who’ve had both – how do you weigh in on the Pierre Herme vs. Laduree debate?

I use my Laduree boxes for display on my perfume plate, to hold business cards, and for makeup brushes. So funny how I was just considering doing a post on it!

Long time reader/lurker but just had to make a comment today – I totally agree that Pierre Herme is far superior to Laduree. Laduree really hasn't changed much in the past 10 years, when I tried macarons for the first time in Paris, while Pierre Herme has been continuously updating with innovative flavors (love Isaphan!) and textures. By the way, have you tried Gerard Mulot?

You can use those boxes to store you jewelry. Using the cupcake paper/moulds you can even make compartments 🙂

Wish I could weigh in on the Laduree vs. Pierre Herme debate, but I haven't had the chance to try either. I can dream, haha. One of these days I vow to try both! Your husband was so sweet to bring the treats home for you!

So pretty and sweet!! I missed Pierre Herme in Paris and instead just stuck to Laduree :/ But I do still love them, and get almost excited about the souvenir boxes as I do the macarons!

I think Laduree is overrated. I much prefer Pierre Herme over it, but Laduree has much prettier boxes… I use mine to hold jewelry. I like luxemburgerli more than macarons, but I think they're only available in Switzerland.

Props to the husband for safely transporting back so many goodies!

Hi J, thanks for commenting and I totally agree with what you said – Laduree did have some experimental flavors I liked a while back (Diva I think was a fave) but sadly I don't see them bringing them back or continuing to innovate much. And yes, Gerard Mulot makes delicious macarons as well! Our hotel actually gave us a small box from GM when we checked out 🙂 Do you like GM the most?

Macarons are my favorite sweets! I, too, prefer Pierre Herme's macarons to Laduree's, though Laduree is a perfectly acceptable substitute when one is stuck in the States. 🙂

I am a "nice" box hoarder too! I do draw the line for more utilitarian boxes but I would have such a hard time getting rid of these gorgeous things. I might suggest using them as gift boxes for birthdays and showers (bridal or baby), though it might be really disappointing to tnose in the know to discover not-macaroni when they open the boxes! 🙂

Tried both PH and Laduree macarons and just like my clothing style, I still prefer classic flavors, so it's Laduree for me! You're making me look forward to my upcoming trip!

I love love love love Pierre Herme! Laduree is pretty good but PH just kicks his macarons up a wee notch with the unexpected. My fav. is the salted butter caramel macaron. <3

    Hello,

I will be heading to London and Paris on a trip and remembered this post. Can you suggest some places where I will be able to find Feodora truffles? Also please let me know if there are any other snacks/treats you recommend I really want to find unique food items to bring back for friends and family!

Love your blog! Hope you reply! 🙂
