Paris – Part 2: Hermes

Disclaimer: originally I wanted to do a big post on all my shopping in Paris – but this part was so long already that I decided to make a post for just Hermes. Warning now that this is a text heavy post 🙂

So as I mentioned yesterday, Mr. Feather and I didn’t do much shopping on this trip. The only thing I really wanted was another Hermes bag, to use for work and travel. I have visited the Hermes flagship at 24 Faubourg for many years, starting from when I would go with my mom with I was little. I really love the brand and have the best memories of going to the shop and being surrounded by all the lovely items and beautiful service.

24 Faubourg, Hermes flagship store

So on our first day in Paris, after a nice breakfast, Mr. Feather and I set off to 24 Faubourg. I had my camera ready to take photos of the window displays for you all….which I unfortunately forgot to do when I saw the enormous line outside! I have seen lines at Louis Vuitton but never at Hermes! Thus that morning, I had the opportunity to teach Mr. Feather a hurried cultural lesson about “Asian line behavior.” Lesson below:

If thou is Asian, and see a line

a) thou must get in the line, for it must be something good, and
b) thou must also shove and push to be get far ahead in the line, because they may run out of whatever is good.

Mr. Feather didn’t believe me and laughed it off until an elderly grandma knocked him in the head with her Gucci belt bag in the rush that occurred when the doors opened at 10:30 AM. “This is madness!” I could hear him calling to me, as I was dodging my own way through, trying my best to avoid a trampling. Our long time sales associate ended up being away, so we found someone else. I asked her if I could please have the bag with the specific specs I wanted. She gave me a sympathetic look and said, “No Birkins, no Kelly bags.”

Some of my favorite displays, photos courtesy of Hermes

What?” I said, confused – “Last time I was here, there was so much selection!”

The sales associate nodded. “Yes that was before…and now, see all these people, waiting here? They are all waiting for these bags. Some wait here all day. We haven’t had a single Birkin come in since early last week.”Slowly, I looked around….there were at least thirty people in the handbag shopping alone, all milling around, asking the same questions: “Birkin? Kelly? Birkin? Kelly?”

Another young couple was leaning against the wall with a picnic sack– the look on their faces said they were prepared to wait ALL DAY LONG, and wouldn’t hesitate to commit at the very least, extreme shoving. So…we left the shop. Over the next few days we stopped by again, and the bag I wanted wasn’t there…and so as were having some wine at a cafe, I told Mr. Feather that I gave up: “I’ll just get it some other time…it wasn’t meant to be, this trip.”

“Okay, well I still need to buy a tie,” Mr. Feather said. “You can wait here and enjoy your wine…I’ll go pick it up.” I was busy on my second glass and feeling quite happy with myself and the world when Mr. Feather came back. “Can you come back to the store with me?” he said, “I forgot my passport and need yours for the VAT.”

So I went back with Mr. Feather…gave my passport, drank some tea the lovely manager brought out, and then signed the passport documentation. I was rooting around for my sunglasses, getting ready to go, when they brought out an ENORMOUS orange box from behind the counter…”Dude, why is the box so big?” I asked. “Oh…I don’t know!” said the smiling manager…”You’ll just have to see.”So I will just end the story now and say that with the help of some lovely and gracious staff, Mr. Feather was able to find the exact bag I wanted and have it held for me. I was so thrilled! I am not a very emotional person but I was dancing out of the store and saying YAY!

I love gold hardware and the color Etoupe (a dark taupe) and so this was the exact bag that I wanted. The pairing I think is a little unexpected but very neutral and classic. Sorry that this was all so long – I wanted to write down the details so that I could remember the memory myself later on 🙂 Thank you for reading about my trip to Hermes and I encourage everybody to visit the shop in Paris – even if you don’t buy anything, you will leave with wonderful memories and a few more items on your wishlist.

PS: Since writing this post, I’ve received quite a lot of emails about getting your “dream bag” at Hermes. My advice would be not to fixate on that “one perfect item” but to just be happy you are in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, at one of the best shops in Paris. There are tons of goodies in Hermes so just go in, take a look, and you may leave with a completely different “dream item” than what you started with. And please be polite to both your fellow shoppers and the sales associates! A smile and patience can go a long way – and remember – enjoy, you are in Paris!

OMG, Mr. Feather is AWESOME!!!!! Also, can he please teach me his brand of Hermes voodoo magic? I'm a good pupil, I swears it!

In other news, I burst a gut guffawing at your "Asians + lines" rules. Too true, them rules be. I always have to remind myself to turn off my "Western" brain and turn on the "Eastern" one every time I go to Asia, lest I wish to die a horrific death by trampling by little, but fierce, women.

@AnonymousYou save a bunch of money…probably around 20% if you are figuring in local US taxes, after VAT is all done.

@AnonymousI think he asked the manager…he definitely did not order it for me, LOL

@JuliaThank you…I need to brush up on my Chinese!

@LisaYes the line was crazy! Was your husband scared like my fiance? Haha!

I am so glad that other people also agree with my "Asian line rules" all your anecdotes and comments made me laugh!

    Hi!

OMG that is so true about asians and lines… that is why i stood in that darn 85 deg C line (even though i hated myself for it) and now i'm ADDICTED!!!

Another thing… i read the book "Bringing Home the Birkin" by Michael Tonello and this is EXACTLY what he says in his book! that the sales people TELL YOU there are no Birkins, until you shell out some cash on other Hermes goods, THEN they bring out a Birkin for you. It's like they only want people who really love the brand to buy the bags, not just random people who ONLY want a Birkin bag. So he'd go to all the Hermes stores in Europe and buy all kinds of Hermes stuff just to get them to bring out the Birkins. I never heard of this actually happening to someone besides what I read in the book!!! but i always have wondered how people do get the Birkins (if sometimes they do just sell a Birkin alone).

CONGRATS it is GORGEOUS! if i could have any Birkin it would totally BE THAT COLOR!!!! it's beautiful!!!!

Holy crap, the colour on that bag is GORGEOUS!!

When my husband and I went to the Gallerie Lafayette, there was a massive line to the LV store and it was full of Asians. We had no interest in buying anything, but then a random lady stopped me in the mall and asked if I could get in line to buy her some bags/wallets. She then handed me a freaking LIST several pages long of stuff she wanted. Apparently, there was a limit and she was all maxed out (her husband had a giant suitcase full of LV goodies that they had just purchased). I was unsure but she then hands me thousands of Euros and says, "I'll meet you back here."

SHE TOTALLY TRUSTED THAT I WOULD WALK TO THE STORE, WAIT IN LINE, AND BUY HER STUFF! The LV store is right next to the mall entrance! I was amazed!

(Yes, I did wait in line to buy her stuff.)

Etoupe is one of my favourite Hermes colours too. I don't own any Birkins (yet, hopefully), but for my first one I still cannot choose between Gold and Etoupe. Since it may be my only Birkin I want a bag that would go with everything (but no black for me), both colours are great neutrals, both looks stunning… I think you own Birkin in gold… Did you notice any colour transferring from jeans? That worries me a little…

@newpetite thank you! I'm not sure how, I think it may have helped that we have shopped before and my mom is also a customer..

@Lisa you are so funny! I love your new flap and I'm sure you are going to get a B in the future

@Chocolate, Cookies, thank you! Yes London was absolute mayhem…you were right…:)

@Holly I have heard of that book! I think it was like that before but nowadays especially in the cheapest places like Paris it is pretty difficult regardless…I think you need to have very high $$ spend..

@Sydney I LOLed at that anecdote!

@Chanello Yes! I have a 30 gold (it looks lighter than that due to the leather). I wanted a 35 for size/work stuff..next I would love a colorful one like yours!

@marishberry I have gold but it is a little lighter than it'd be in Togo due to my leather (vache liagee). Honestly gold is a bit lighter and jean transfer does happen (it happened to mine) but it can also happen to Etoupe. If you wear lots of browns, etc I would recommend gold – otherwise if you do a mix of blacks and browns, I would recommend Etoupe, it's the "new" gold and a versatile classic color which goes with everything. If I could only have one B it'd be a 30 in Etoupe (but I'm a shortie). Feel free to email me if you have more questions!

    Thank you again everybody!

You are pretty much spot on about the line impulse. I am as Americanized as they get and I still can't pass up the urge to whack a granny with a cinderblock just to catch a glimpse of what might be at the end of the line! I've also heard that Parisians are not so good with lines. It's definitely something that would drive my boyfriend insane (he once grumbled about a guy cutting in line at Starbucks for 3 days–given, it was exam week but still). Also, Mr. Feather is so sweet! This story definitely gave me fuzzy feelings all around!

    Katherine!!!

What an amazing story! Mr. F is SO SWEET and thoughtful! And that etoupe with GHW is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!! It's the perfect neutral color (and on my wish list but in 25 or 30)!

LOL @ "if thou is Asian"!! That's the best! I feel sorry for Mr. F for getting hit on the head! My DH has had to go through some learning lessons with my Asian family! :o)

Hi there, I love your blog very much and thank you for this post – it was so lovely. I love your new Birkin very much. Anyway..I´m planning to buy birkin 35 or 30 and I don´t have any idea how much they really cost. because some say that you pay 10000 dollars for Birkin bag, another that you pay 25000. Could you please tell me what is the real price for 30 -35 Birkin (no fancy leather, just the most basic leather)
    Thank you so much!!!

@Anonymous Aww thank you! The price in USD should be around $10K for a 30cm possibly a little more for 35cm in the US + tax. You can save some by buying from Europe if qualify for VAT refund but stock can be quite low, especially in Paris. Hope that helps!

Hahaha! Love the Asians in line bit! I have to agree with you. I just came back from Paris and witness the same. I got shoved at least half a dozen times! Thank Goodness I am not into Hermes, (yet) at least Rue Cambon was quiet 'civilised' that day 🙂 Anyway, must take your advice and visit Rue Faubourg on my next visit!

Thanks for the lovely story, Kat!

Hi, Can anyone tell me whats the deal with showing your passport in Paris high end boutique? If you show your passport to LV store, Chanel will you get some type of discount or do you get your tax back once you claim it once you go back to your country? Canada & USA?

Please advised. I would appreciate it very much! THANK YOU

Thanks for sharing your hermes story- and although I just follow you recently, I truly enjoy reading your blog.

I really like your Etoupe Birkin with GH- I have a chanel jumbo in the same colour from 2010 collection and I totally loves it since it goes with everything. Since I am new with Hermes would you mind sharing the details of this bag? I have bought Chanel in Paris and other city in europe and I understand that there is a big saving buying there than in north america. Is that also the case wiht Hermes? How much this bag cost in the US and what did Mr Feather paid in Paris? I am debating whether to buy it here or wait until my next trip to Europe. Thanks so much !!!

      Hi Nanne,

Thank you for your kind comment! Your jumbo sounds so pretty (I think I know which one it is – I’m jealous!). Hermes does cost quite a bit less in Europe especially with the current euro situation – this bag was around $10K in the US (+ tax) but from Europe I believe it came out to be around $7.5K. However Etoupe is a popular color and can be difficult to find – if you have your heart set on it, I might advise that you just purchase it wherever you happen to find it. Good luck!

    Thanks!
